Romero was recalled by the Phillies on Friday, Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports.
The 23-year-old was optioned to the alternate training site after serving as the 29th man for Thursday's doubleheader, but he'll quickly rejoin the team with Jose Alvarez (groin) placed on the injured list. Romero has yet to make his major-league debut and had a 6.88 ERA, 1.94 WHIP and 40:35 K:BB over 53.2 innings at Triple-A in 2019.
The Phillies optioned Romero to their alternate training site Friday.
Romero joined Philadelphia as its 29th man for Thursday's doubleheader with the Blue Jays. He didn't appear in either of the Phillies' losses and was sent back to the alternate site in Lehigh Valley ahead of the team's weekend road trip to Atlanta.
Romero is serving as the 29th man for Thursday's doubleheader against the Blue Jays.
He will likely be used as a long man if either game gets out of hand. Romero, a 23-year-old lefty, has yet to make his MLB debut and logged a 6.88 ERA in 13 starts at Triple-A last year.
Romero was optioned to the Phillies' secondary training site on Sunday, Meghan Montemurro of The Athletic reports.
Romero earned his first big-league callup Saturday but remained on the roster for just two days and did not get the chance to make his debut. He's clearly in the Phillies' plans, however, so he could get the chance to return to the roster when the team next needs an extra lefty.
Romero was recalled from the Phillies' alternate training site Friday, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.
The 23-year-old was unable to earn a spot on the Opening Day roster, but he's now on the cusp of his major-league debut after being promoted Friday. Romero split 2019 between Double-A and Triple-A and had a 5.82 ERA and 1.55 WHIP over 11.1 innings, and he should work in long relief for the Phillies.
Romero was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Saturday, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.
The 23-year-old lefty logged 13 starts at Triple-A last season and was added to the 40-man roster this offseason as protection from the Rule 5 draft. He lacks a high ceiling and will offer organizational pitching depth this year.
Romero was added to the Phillies' 40-man roster Wednesday, Meghan Montemurro of The Athletic reports.
This protects him from the Rule 5 draft. The 23-year-old southpaw logged a 6.88 ERA, 1.92 WHIP and 40:35 K:BB in 53.2 innings at Triple-A. He should return to that level to try to prove he can throw enough strikes to make it as a back-end starter.
Romero was placed on the temporary inactive list Friday, Tom Housenick of The Morning Call reports.
It's unclear as to when Romero could return to action, but with the minor-league season winding down, it's certainly possible his season is over.
Romero threw three scoreless innings in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Rays. He struck out three, walked two, and did not allow a single hit.
Romero moved up one spot in the Phillies' pitching prospect rankings when Sixto Sanchez was shipped to Miami. He's yet to reach Triple-A but posted a solid 3.80 ERA in 18 starts for Double-A Reading last season. If his numbers continue or improve at the Triple-A level, a big-league debut late in the season can't be ruled out.
The Phillies list Romero (ribs) as their starting pitcher for their fourth Grapefruit League game Monday versus the Tigers, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports.
Romero covered just 106.2 innings last season at Double-A Reading while dealing with a fractured rib that kept him on the 7-day disabled list for a large chunk of the second half. The Phillies' decision to invite him to major-league spring training along with including him in the pitching schedule early during the Grapefruit League schedule suggests there's little concern about his health heading into 2019. Once camp closes, Romero will likely be ticketed for Triple-A Lehigh Valley or a return trip to Reading.
Romero could get innings in winter ball to make up for lost development time due to a fractured rib, Matt Gelb of The Athletic Philadelphia reports.
Romero has been on the disabled list since mid-July with what was originally reported as a strained oblique. Prior to the injury, he'd made 18 starts for Double-A Reading, posting a solid 3.80 ERA. The lefty's strikeout rate (22.1 percent) and walk rate (9.1 percent) were unremarkable, though his 52.3 percent groundball rate was solid. He'll have a shot to make his MLB debut sometime in 2019 if he recovers well from his injury. The 22-year-old is a potential mid-rotation starter, with a fastball that touches 96 mph and a promising changeup.
Romero was placed on the minor-league DL on Friday due to a sprained oblique, Meghan Montemurro of The Athletic reports.
The Phillies didn't describe a timetable for Romero but it's expected that he will be out a couple weeks while recovering from this injury. Through 18 starts with Double-A Reading, he's logged a 3.80 ERA and 1.30 WHIP with 100 strikeouts in 106.2 innings.
Romero is having a rough start to the year for Double-A Reading, The Athletic Philadelphia reports.
The 21-year-old has a 6.68 ERA through six starts, walking 10.1 percent of batters while striking out just 16.2 percent. A fourth-round pick in the 2016 draft, Romero has never struggled before in professional ball, posting ERAs of 2.56 or lower for short-season Williamsport, Low-A Lakewood and High-A Clearwater over the past two years. Heading into the season, the lefty was projected as a possible future mid-rotation starter, but he'll have to turn things around for Reading to remain on that path.
Romero will open the season at Double-A Reading, MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo reports.
Romero has made a swift ascension through the Phillies' system, opening at Low-A last year and earning a midseason promotion to High-A. He has never logged an ERA above 2.56 in the minors, but projects to be more of a No. 3 or No. 4 starter long term. Romero is not on the 40-man roster, so he may not make a fantasy impact until 2019.
