No quarterback has experienced a roller coaster ride in the NFL like Nick Foles. From Super Bowl MVP to the No. 3 quarterback of the Chicago Bears, Foles went through the highest of highs and lowest of lows at quarterback.
With a golden opportunity to resurrect his career, the Indianapolis Colts need a veteran quarterback while Carson Wentz is sidelined with a foot injury. Foles is all too familiar with what Frank Reich brings to the table.
"Listen, Frank Reich is one of the favorite -- if not my favorite -- coaches of all time," Foles said to reporters at Bears training camp Monday. "He understands me as a player, he understands me as a person. I haven't had any talks with them (Colts about a trade). I'm a Chicago Bear right now, but he knows me.
"You all watched the 2017 season and the playoffs where he changed the offense and built it around me. He understood my mentality as a player and he was able to build it around me and put me in a successful position."
Foles, the Super Bowl LII MVP, had a postseason for the ages filling in for Wentz with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2017. He completed 72.6% of his passes for 971 yards with six touchdowns to one interception in three games during the Eagles' Super Bowl run. Reich and former Eagles head coach Doug Pederson used a combination of RPOs to make Foles more comfortable in the offense.
Which makes a Foles reunion with Reich natural.
"I know there's a lot of talks out there. Trust me, I hear it, I see it," Foles said. "With that being said, they have Carson. I have a lot of respect for Carson. He's a tremendous player. He's going through adversity once again, but he'll bounce back. We haven't had any talks (with the Colts and Reich)."
If Foles were to approve a trade out of Chicago, the Colts do fit the mold of what he's looking for. The 32-year-old Foles knows what he wants in his next team, if the Bears were to deal him.
"I don't want to go to someone I don't know," Foles said. "When you have a great coaching staff, it's something special. A big reason we were great in Philly was we had a great coaching staff. We did really well and they put us in a position to succeed -- and it showed. I think everyone can say it showed.
"I don't want to just go somewhere where I don't know him (the coach), I don't know the offense. I've gone down that road before and it's not fun. You got to be somewhere that you know, something that you're comfortable with so you can pull that trigger as fast as you can. The NFL is too fast, you have to be able to just let him rip."
Foles fell out of favor in Chicago last season and was relegated to the No. 3 quarterback role. The Bears signed Andy Dalton in free agency and traded up to draft Justin Fields in the first round. Both will fight for the quarterback position while Foles' situation is in limbo.
"I've shown what I can do in the right situation," Foles said. "A player wants to be in the right situation. You know, running the plays he wants to run and dong it the way he was to do it -- in compliments with the coaching staff. I'm in this situation where I'm the 3 (third quarterback). That doesn't mean I'm complacent. That means I keep working. I come in here every single day to work and help my teammates be better."
Whatever team does trade for Foles may hit the jackpot. Foles made a bold statement on his way out, giving the NFL another reason not to doubt him.
"The version of me right now is a much better version of me that played in the Super Bowl," Foles said. "I'll tell you that. I'm confident in that."
