  • Saints' Cameron Jordan: Recovering from ankle surgery

Jordan is recovering from offseason surgery undergone to address an ankle injury that hampered him during the 2023 campaign, Matthew Paras of NOLA.com reports. Jordan suffered the ankle injury in mid-November, and while he didn't subsequently miss any games, his defensive snap share did notably diminish down the stretch. The 13-year veteran has missed only two regular-season games in his NFL career, so recovering from an ankle procedure doesn't add any true concerns about his durability. Jordan has stated that he desires to suit up for the 2024 season, and with better injury luck, he could be set for a bounceback after finishing out 2023 with just two sacks across 17 games.

  • Saints' Johnathan Abram: Staying with New Orleans

Abram agreed to a contract with the Saints on Wednesday, Mike Triplett of NewOrleans.Football reports. In nine regular-season games with the Saints in 2023, the 2019 first-round draft pick recorded 26 tackles and one interception. By bringing back the 27-year-old, New Orleans' secondary maintains some needed depth following the offseason departures of Marcus Maye, Isaac Yiadom and Lonnie Johnson.

  • Saints' Nephi Sewell: Still on mend from surgery

Saints head coach Dennis Allen said in February that Sewell (knee) isn't expected to be ready for training camp, Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com reports. Given that Sewell tore his ACL in Week 17 last season, it's not surprising that the linebacker will be eased back from surgery. Once healthy, the 25-year-old -- who recorded 15 tackles in 16 regular-season outings in 2023 -- is in line to reprise his depth/special-teams role with New Orleans.

  • Saints' Chase Young: Facing uncertainty with neck

Young's one-year contract with the Saints gives New Orleans protection in the event he struggles to recover from his upcoming neck surgery or otherwise misses time, with 61 percent of the money in the deal coming from per-game roster bonuses, Matthew Paras of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports. Young has a $5.01 million base salary and can earn an additional $7.99 million in per-game roster bonuses, with the former guaranteed at signing and the latter only guaranteed if he's released. In other words, he'll miss out on around $470,000 for each game he's on the roster but inactive. Albert Breer of SI.com reports that scans on Young's neck led to reduced interest in free agency, due to a condition that was first discovered last summer after he suffered a stinger in the preseason. He ended up playing seven games for the Commanders, and then 12 post-trade for the 49ers (including playoffs), recording 7.5 sacks in the regular season and an additional sack during the postseason. Young was the No. 2 overall pick and Defensive Rookie of the Year back in 2020, but he suffered a severe knee injury the following season and managed only 1.5 sacks in 12 appearances between 2021 and 2022. He's scheduled for surgery Thursday and expected to be healthy for training camp, at which point the Saints likely will use him off the bench behind starting defensive ends Cameron Jordan and Carl Granderson.

Johnson will return to Houston, where he spent the first three seasons of his career before suiting up for the Titans and Saints the last two years. The 28-year-old appeared in 12 games with New Orleans last season, missing time due to a knee injury and seeing more work on special teams than in the secondary. He'll likely be in line for a similar role with the Texans.

Davis and New Orleans agreed to terms Monday to restructure the final year of his contract into a new two-year, $17.25 million deal, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Davis' new two-year contract additionally includes $13.25 million in injury guarantees, while his initial deal included none. The 35-year-old veteran could now well be positioned to finish his NFL career with the Saints, though he's still playing at an extremely high level. Davis' tackling output isn't usually high enough to provide him consistent fantasy value outside of big plays, though he did tally 121 stops (74 solo) in 2023, the second-highest mark of his career.

  • Saints' Tyrann Mathieu: Inks new deal with New Orleans

The Saints re-signed Mathieu on a two-year, $13 million contract Thursday, Josina Anderson of CBS Sports reports. Despite a slight drop in his numbers in 2023, Mathieu remained effective, tallying 75 total tackles and nine passes defended, including four interceptions through 17 regular-season contests. Assuming he can avoid injury, the 2013 third-rounder should maintain his every-down role as the Saints' starting free safety in 2024.

  • Marcus Maye: Cut loose by Saints

The Saints intend to release Maye (shoulder) at the start of the new league year, Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com reports. The move could save the Saints up to $7.2 million in cap space. Meanwhile, Maye will likely have to settle for a short-term deal in the hopes of proving he can stay on the field.

  • Saints' Cameron Jordan: Restructures contract

Jordan restructured his contract with the Saints on Thursday, which will save the team more than $9 million against the cap this season, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports. However, it appears he'll still get his guaranteed $13 million this season while deferring some non-guaranteed money toward next year. The veteran lineman played a career-low 731 defensive snaps in 2023, which also saw him compile a career-low 43 tackles and just two sacks.

  • Saints' Payton Turner: Plays two games in 2023

Payton Turner logged one tackle while playing two games during the 2023 regular season. Turner sustained a significant toe injury during the season opener and was sidelined on IR until the Week 18 win over Atlanta. As a result, the 2021 first-round pick was significantly hampered by injury for the third season in a row, as he's now appeared in just 15 games during his career. The 2024 campaign will likely serve as a make-or-break season for Turner in New Orleans.

The 29-year-old still logged nine fewer tackles than the 2022 campaign when he tallied a career-high 28. Kpassagnon provided considerably more production than younger defensive ends Payton Turner and Isaiah Foskey, though these three will likely compete for a rotational role heading into the 2024 campaign.

Saunders played a career-high 500 defensive snaps in 2023 after joining the Saints on a three-year, $12.3 million deal in March. The former Chiefs defensive tackle went on to eclipse his previous career high for tackles set during his 2022 campaign in Kansas City; however, he failed to wrangle a sack for New Orleans after logging 3.5 last season. Saunders will look to maintain a primary role at defensive tackle alongside Nathan Shepherd and Bryan Bresee heading into the 2024 campaign.

Shepherd appeared in all 17 games during the 2023 regular season, logging 50 tackles, including 3.0 sacks. Shepherd set a new career high in tackles for the fourth season in a row while also accumulating at least 3.0 sacks for the first time in his career. The 30-year-old played in more of a rotational role over his first five seasons with the Jets, but he led the Saints' defensive tackles with 562 defensive snaps played this season. Shepherd signed a three-year, $15 million contract with New Orleans in March, and he should retain a prominent role alongside fellow interior defensive linemen Khalen Saunders and 2023 first-round pick Bryan Bresee in 2024.
