Top Royce Freeman News

  • Royce Freeman: Back with Los Angeles

The Chargers signed Freeman to the practice squad Tuesday.

Freeman was waived Dec. 16 to make room for safety Marcus Maye but quickly finds himself back on the practice squad. The signing of fellow running back Jaret Patterson to the active roster due to the injury to Kimani Vidal (neck) seems to have cleared up a roster spot that the Chargers thought best used on additional depth at the position.

  • Royce Freeman: Waived from practice squad

The Chargers waived Freeman from the practice squad Tuesday.

The running back was not elevated for a game in his 15-day tenure on the practice squad. In a corresponding move, the Chargers signed safety Marcus Maye to the practice squad. Freeman will now be placed on waivers and will become a free agent if he clears.

  • Royce Freeman: Signs with Los Angeles

Freeman signed with the Chargers' practice squad Monday.

Freeman spent five days with the Bears back in August but was cut ahead of Week 1. The 29-year-old running back hasn't appeared in a regular-season game since 2023 with the Rams.

  • Royce Freeman: Released by Chicago

The Bears released Freeman on Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Freeman was signed ahead of the Bears' final preseason game, and he rushed five times for 22 yards on 13 offensive snaps in the exhibition finale. The 29-year-old will head back to free agency.

  • Bears' Royce Freeman: Heading to Chicago

The Bears signed Freeman to a contract Wednesday, Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic reports.

Freeman will take the spot on the Bears' roster vacated by Deion Hankins, who was placed on injured reserve due to a shoulder injury that he picked up during Sunday's preseason game against the Bills. Freeman was on the practice squads of the Rams, Bears and Browns in 2024, and last saw regular-season action in 2023 with the Rams, when he rushed for 319 yards and a touchdown on 77 carries across 14 games.

  • Royce Freeman: Joins Rams' practice squad

Los Angeles signed Freeman to the practice squad Tuesday.

Foreman joins a Rams team in new need of backfield depth with Blake Corum (forearm) having been placed on IR. He could get a chance to play an emergency role behind all of Kyren Williams, Ronnie Rivers and Cody Schrader in Monday's wild-card round playoff game against the Vikings.

  • Royce Freeman: Cut by Chicago

The Bears cut Freeman from the practice squad Monday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.

Freeman joined the Bears' practice squad Dec. 11 after being cut by the Browns in early October. He wasn't elevated to the active roster, and the veteran running back will now explore his options on the open market. Freeman played in 14 regular-season games for the Rams in 2023 and turned 77 carries into 319 yards and two touchdowns.

  • Royce Freeman: Gets opportunity with Chicago

The Bears signed Freeman to their practice squad Wednesday, Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com reports.

Freeman turned some heads as a rookie in 2018 with Denver when he rushed 130 times for 521 yards (4.0 YPC) and five touchdowns while adding another 72 yards on 14 catches through the air. However, he hasn't since topped his yardage or TD total from that season, and he's yet to get into an NFL game this year despite spending time with Cleveland's practice squad earlier in the campaign. Freeman could get elevated quickly by Chicago, though, if Roschon Johnson (concussion) and Travis Homer (head) miss Monday's Week 15 contest against Minnesota.

  • Royce Freeman: Let go by Cleveland

The Browns released Freeman from their practice squad Tuesday.

Freeman spent three-plus weeks on Cleveland's practice squad, but with Nick Chubb (knee, PUP) and Nyheim Hines (knee, NFI) practicing and nearing a return coupled with Pierre Strong's return to health made Freeman expendable. The 28-year-old Freeman will look for an opportunity elsewhere.

  • Royce Freeman: Inks to Cleveland's practice squad

The Browns signed Freeman to the practice squad Tuesday.

Freeman spent time with the Cowboys this offseason, but he wasn't able to stick to the team's final roster. Now, he gets an opportunity in Cleveland, where, with Pierre Strong (hamstring) considered week-to-week, a chance to contribute could come as early as Sunday versus the Giants.

  • Royce Freeman: Doesn't make 'Boys' 53-man roster

Freeman was released by the Cowboys on Tuesday.

Freeman's chances of making the Cowboys' 53-man roster appeared slim due to the fact that he was the third running back behind Malik Davis and Deuce Vaughn entering Saturday's preseason finale against the Chargers. Freeman finished the preseason with 67 rushing yards on 15 carries while adding one catch for seven yards. The 2018 third-round pick should garner some interest from teams looking to add a veteran running back to their roster or practice squad.

  • Cowboys' Royce Freeman: Third back on field Saturday

Freeman carried the ball eight times for 35 yards and caught his only target for seven yards in Saturday's 26-19 preseason loss to the Chargers.

With Ezekiel Elliott and Rico Dowdle sitting out Dallas' preseason finale, Malik Davis and Deuce Vaughn both saw carries before Freeman did and posted better yards per carry averages on the day, which bodes poorly for the veteran's chances of being on the roster for Week 1. Freeman has been barely hanging on in the NFL for a few years now, and his 77 carries for the Rams in 2023 was his highest total since 2019. While he still appears capable of handling a depth role in a backfield, the Cowboys may elect to go with their younger homegrown options instead.

  • Cowboys' Royce Freeman: Solid showing in win

Freeman (groin) rushed seven times for 32 yards in the Cowboys' 27-12 preseason win over the Raiders on Saturday night.

Freeman was able to suit up after having suffered a groin injury earlier in the month, and he finished second in rushing yardage after coming into the game behind starter Malik Davis. Freeman should have a solid chance of securing the No. 3 running back job given his experience, as well as the fact Davis didn't exactly impress with his starting opportunity Saturday (five carries, 14 yards).
