Player Outlook
Ferguson will compete to be the starting tight end in Dallas, and he could be a surprise Fantasy option in 2023. He's not worth drafting in the majority of Fantasy leagues, but he could be a waiver-wire addition during the season. Dalton Schultz is now in Houston, and Ferguson will compete with rookie Luke Schoonmaker and Peyton Hendershot for the Cowboys' No. 1 tight end job. Schultz leaves behind 89 targets, 57 catches, 577 yards and five touchdowns, and he was a primary option in the passing game over the past three seasons. Now, Dallas added Brandin Cooks this offseason, and the Cowboys should rely more on CeeDee Lamb, Cooks and Michael Gallup then the tight ends in the passing game. Still, Ferguson could be a surprise Fantasy option if he outplays Schoonmaker and Hendershot, and this tight end battle is one to watch in training camp and potentially all year.

  • Cowboys' Jake Ferguson: TEs to Sit

I like Ferguson as a starting tight end for the remainder of the season, but this should be a tough matchup for him against the Patriots. New England has already limited the tight ends from Philadelphia, Miami and the Jets to a combined seven catches for 58 yards, and Dallas Goedert had no catches on just one target in Week 1. Ferguson has scored at least 9.8 PPR points in each of his past two games against the Jets and Cardinals, but this is a much tougher matchup against the Patriots.

  • Cowboys' Jake Ferguson: Week 4 Waiver Priority List

Ferguson has two games with seven targets this season, and he should continue to be a go-to option for Dak Prescott moving forward. He scored a touchdown in Week 2 against the Jets, and he caught five passes for 48 yards in Week 3 at Arizona. Ferguson has two tough matchups coming up in Week 4 against New England and Week 5 at San Francisco, but that should mean more passing for Prescott. Consider Ferguson a low-end No. 1 Fantasy tight end for the rest of the season, and he's worth adding for at least 10 percent of your FAB.

  • Cowboys' Jake Ferguson: Five catches in Sunday's loss

Ferguson caught five of seven targets for 48 yards in Sunday's 28-16 loss to the Cardinals. The second-year tight end matched his catch total from the first two games of the season combined while posting the second-best yardage total of his career, after his 3-57-0 line against the Giants in Week 12 of last year. Ferguson is emerging as a reliable security blanket for Dak Prescott, but he faces a tough test in Week 4 against a Patriots defense that's given up only seven catches to TEs over its first three contests.

  • Cowboys' Jake Ferguson: Sleeper TEs

I'm looking forward to seeing this Cowboys offense in a competitive game after two blowouts against the Giants and Jets. That might not happen in Week 3 at Arizona, but Ferguson should be considered a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option in that matchup. He has 11 targets in two games but only five catches for 22 yards and a touchdown to show for it. With Brandin Cooks (knee) banged up, Ferguson will remain a popular target for Dak Prescott, which should lead to plenty of positive production against a Cardinals defense now down safety Budda Baker (hamstring). Arizona also just allowed Darren Waller to catch six passes for 76 yards on eight targets in Week 2

  • Cowboys' Jake Ferguson: Week 3 Streamers (TE Preview)

Ferguson leads the entire NFL with seven red-zone targets and five targets inside the 5-yard line. The Cardinals have one of the worst defenses in the league, and with Budda Baker on IR, they will be particularly soft over the middle.

  • Cowboys' Jake Ferguson: Finds end zone in big win

Ferguson caught three of four targets for 11 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 30-10 win over the Jets. After failing to do much on seven targets last week, Ferguson made a quick impact this time around, opening the scoring by catching a four-yard TD toss from Dak Prescott midway through the first quarter. The tight end nearly had a second touchdown later in the game, but Prescott made a rare bad throw Sunday and missed Ferguson in the back of the end zone on Dallas' first drive of the second half. While the TD could be the first of many for the second-year player in 2023, rookie Luke Schoonmaker also caught a one-yard TD in the win and Peyton Hendershot got a carry on a jet sweep near the goal line that he failed to score on, suggesting the Cowboys' tight end picture could be more of a committee than those with fantasy shares in Ferguson might like.

  • Cowboys' Jake Ferguson: Sleeper TEs

It's clear that Ferguson will be someone that Dak Prescott leans on this season, and he led the Cowboys in targets with seven in Week 1 at the Giants. That's important since Prescott attempted just 24 passes against New York. Ferguson only had two catches for 11 yards against the Giants, which clearly needs to improve, but I like him as a low-end starter in all leagues in Week 2 against the Jets.

  • Cowboys' Jake Ferguson: Top DFS Play

If Travis Kelce comes back, I'm just playing him this week. We can find values somewhere else. But if Kelce and Andrews remain out, I'm not sure why you would do anything other than punt the position. At least Ferguson has the red-zone usage that could lead to a touchdown or two.

  • Cowboys' Jake Ferguson: Week 2 Waiver Priority List

Ferguson might have had a huge stat line if the Cowboys were in a competitive game against the Giants in Week 1 instead of a 40-0 blowout. Despite the score, Ferguson still led Dallas in targets with seven, but he finished with only two catches for 11 yards. Better days are ahead for Dak Prescott's starting tight end, and Ferguson should be rostered in all leagues for at least 5 percent of your remaining FAB.

  • Cowboys' Jake Ferguson: Week 2 Streamers (TE Preview)

In Week 1 I am more concerned about usage than performance, so I'm going to enjoy all those red-zone targets Ferguson saw and ignore the fact that it looked like he couldn't catch a cold. The Jets corners are so good that teams often look to the tight end more against them, so I expect another heavy dose of targets for Ferguson in Week 2. Someone is probably going to drop him after last week. Don't be afraid to pick him up and stream him.

  • Cowboys' Jake Ferguson: Leads team in targets

Ferguson had two receptions on seven targets for 11 yards in Sunday's 40-0 win over the Giants. Ferguson's seven targets wound up being the most for any Dallas player in a lopsided contest that featured just 13 completions for Dak Prescott. The 24-year-old tight end failed to turn most of those opportunities into production, but part of the blame can be placed on wet playing conditions. It is clear that the Cowboys want to get Ferguson involved offensively in his first year as the starter, so patience should be exercised from a fantasy manager's perspective.

  • Cowboys' Jake Ferguson: Sleeper TEs

Ferguson should do well this season as the new starting tight end for the Cowboys, and I like his matchup in Week 1 against the Giants. Dak Prescott has a great history of leaning on his tight ends, especially against the Giants. In Prescott's past four games against the Giants, his tight ends have combined for 30 catches for 335 yards and three touchdowns on 35 targets. Ferguson, in a part-time role last year in Week 12, had three catches for 57 yards on three targets, but he could blow up this week. I consider him a borderline No. 1 Fantasy tight end in all leagues.

  • Cowboys' Jake Ferguson: Week 1 Waiver Priority List

Ferguson is one of my favorite sleepers this season because Dak Prescott loves using his tight ends. Since becoming the Dallas quarterback in 2016, his tight end (predominantly Jason Witten and Dalton Schultz) has been No. 2 on the team in targets in three of seven seasons. And in Prescott's rookie year in 2016, Witten was third on the team in targets with 95 but just three targets shy of leading the team. The top Cowboys tight end with Prescott has never had fewer than 83 targets in a season in six of seven years, and Schultz has posted quality stats the past three seasons, averaging 66 catches on 94 targets for 666.7 yards and 5.7 touchdowns. Dallas has a loaded receiving corps with CeeDee Lamb, Brandin Cooks and Michael Gallup, but Ferguson should still be heavily involved. He's worth a late-round flier in all leagues and should be added for up to 5 percent of your remaining FAB.

  • Cowboys' Jake Ferguson: Labeled as breakout candidate by QB

Cowboys quarterback Dak Presoctt recently predicted that Ferguson will become a "big-time player in this league" in 2023, Dak Prescott, Jon Machota of The Athletic reports. The second-year tight end tops the Dallas depth chart heading into the regular season, and while Ferguson will likely face competition from rookie second-round pick Luke Schoonmaker as the year progresses, there's good reason to anticipate a breakout if he hangs onto the starting job. Over the prior three years, Dalton Schultz averaged 66 catches on 94 targets for 666.7 yards and 5.7 touchdowns as the Cowboys' No. 1 tight end, and Ferguson is arguably a better athlete at a similar size.

  • Cowboys' Jake Ferguson: Finishes second in receiving yards

Ferguson caught all three of his targets for 38 yards in Saturday's preseason loss to the Jaguars. Ferguson was one of the few projected Week 1 starters that Dallas put on the field against Jacksonville. The 24-year-old was working on improving his blocking during camp, but he reminded everyone that he is still a receiving threat. Ferguson is closing in on taking over the starting job vacated by Dalton Schultz's move to Houston in the offseason.

  • Cowboys' Jake Ferguson: Shines as blocker Thursday

Ferguson was able to seal the edge against Micah Parsons on two separate plays during Thursday's practice, Kyle Youmans of the Cowboys' website reports. Dallas typically wants its top tight end to contribute both as a receiver and a blocker, so Ferguson's stout showing in the latter department against the team's most disruptive defender is an excellent sign that he will be have little trouble moving into the starting role this year. With 2023 second-round pick Luke Schoonmaker (foot) still on the NFI list and missing valuable reps, the door is open for Ferguson to claim the same kind of snap and target volume that Dalton Schultz saw the last couple seasons before moving cross-state to the Texans in free agency.
