Dallas released McCoy (quadriceps) on Tuesday.
The transaction is made possible by an injury waiver in McCoy's contract, per Adam Schefter of ESPN. The 32-year-old, who suffered a ruptured right quad tendon Monday, will retain his $3 million signing bonus but the Cowboys are freed up from the rest of the three-year, $18.3 million deal McCoy signed back in March.
McCoy suffered a ruptured right quad tendon during Monday's practice, Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News reports.
As a result, the defensive tackle will require surgery and will be out for the season. In his absence, there will be added snaps for the likes of Antwaun Woods, rookie Neville Gallimore and second-year player Trystan Hill.
It appears as though McCoy suffered a torn ACL during Monday's practice, Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News reports.
The Cowboys will wait for the results of the defensive tackle's MRI, but it looks as though the team is bracing to be without McCoy this season. The 32-year-old, who signed a three-year, $18.3 million contract with Dallas in March, had been in line to fill the void created by the offseason departure of Maliek Collins.
McCoy suffered a leg injury during drills Monday and will undergo an MRI, Calvin Watkins of The Dallas Morning News reports.
McCoy was apparently injured while engaged in drills with Antwaun Woods. There's been no indication yet of the severity of the injury, but Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports that the issue is with McCoy's right knee and that he was unable to walk off the field under his own power. The Cowboys should have a better idea of McCoy's status after the MRI. If he were to miss significant time, Woods, rookie Neville Gallimore and second-year DT Trysten Hill could all see additional snaps.
McCoy has agreed to a three-year deal with the Cowboys, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports.
The veteran defensive lineman will head to Dallas after a one-year stint with the Panthers in which he recorded 37 tackles (15 solo) and five sacks across 16 games. McCoy has 59.5 career sacks and has proven to be durable, missing only eight games over the past eight seasons. The 32-year-old figures to slot into the Cowboys starting lineup given that Maliek Collins has agreed to join the Raiders.
McCoy finished the 2019 season with 37 tackles (15 solo) and five sacks in 16 games played.
McCoy was released last offseason after spending the first nine years of his career in Tampa Bay. The former All Pro responded by signing a one-year deal with the in-division Panthers and went on to start every game. Although McCoy's sack total marked his lowest since 2012 and included 2.5 against the Bucs in Week 6, his overall production still wasn't too far off his established standard. That reliability should enable the 31-year-old to garner decent interest as a veteran free agent again this offseason.

McCoy didn't practice Wednesday, but he's now on track to draw his usual start against the Saints on Sunday. The veteran defensive end hasn't yet missed a game this season despite battling multiple lingering injuries.

McCoy dealt with knee and quadriceps injuries ahead of this past Sunday's loss to the Redskins, and he suffered an ankle injury during the contest. McCoy didn't practice last Wednesday but was able to shake the injury and record a season-high 80-percent snap share in this past Sunday's loss to the Saints. The veteran defensive end may follow a similar path this week, although the addition of his quad injury is concerning. Either Wes Horton or Efe Obada would assume a starting role if McCoy can't go.

McCoy was a DNP for Week 11's Wednesday practice as well, but he was full speed Thursday and logged a 71-percent snap share in the game. Thus, there's no real scare about his status for Sunday's matchup against the Saints. McCoy has been solid this season with 27 tackles (12 solo) and four sacks.
