  • Gerald McCoy: Retires from NFL

McCoy (knee) announced his retirement from the NFL on Friday. McCoy has decided to hang up his cleats after an 11-year career that included stints with the Buccaneers, Panthers and the Raiders. The defensive lineman recorded 334 tackles, including 59.5 sacks, while forcing six fumbles, recovering four fumbles and deflecting 24 passes over 140 games. The six-time Pro Bowler selection and one-time All-Pro selection was one of the most dominant at his position during his career.

  • Raiders' Gerald McCoy: Doesn't return to Monday's contest

The Raiders ruled McCoy (knee) out for the remainder of Monday's game against the Ravens. McCoy had to be carted off the field, which suggests the knee injury is probably pretty serious. The six-time Pro Bowler was looking to get back on track after he missed the entire 2020 campaign with a ruptured quadriceps.

  • Panthers' Gerald McCoy: Suffers injury Sunday

McCoy (ankle) is questionable to return to Sunday's game against the Redskins, Alaina Getzenberg of The Charlotte Observer reports. McCoy was on the wrong end of a cut block by offensive lineman Donald Penn, and was seen receiving extra treatment from the medical staff on the sideline. With the Panthers already thin on their offensive line due to injuries, the only healthy depth defensive line players are Efe Obada and Stacy McGee.

  • Panthers' Gerald McCoy: Sits out practice Wednesday

McCoy (knee/quadriceps) didn't participate in Wednesday's practice, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic reports. McCoy didn't practice last Wednesday but was able to shake the injury and record a season-high 80-percent snap share in this past Sunday's loss to the Saints. The veteran defensive end may follow a similar path this week, although the addition of his quad injury is concerning. Either Wes Horton or Efe Obada would assume a starting role if McCoy can't go.

  • Panthers' Gerald McCoy: Limited in practice Thursday

McCoy (knee) was a limited participant in Thursday's practice, Steve Reed of the Associated Press reports. McCoy did not practice Wednesday due to a knee injury he's been nursing since late September. There's not yet any reason to be concerned about McCoy's availability for Week 12, given that he hasn't yet missed any time due to the issue. The veteran defensive tackle has a tough matchup against the Saints on deck Sunday.

  • Panthers' Gerald McCoy: Not practicing Wednesday

McCoy (knee) didn't participate in Wednesday's practice, Steve Reed of the Associated Press reports. McCoy was a DNP for Week 11's Wednesday practice as well, but he was full speed Thursday and logged a 71-percent snap share in the game. Thus, there's no real scare about his status for Sunday's matchup against the Saints. McCoy has been solid this season with 27 tackles (12 solo) and four sacks.

  • Panthers' Gerald McCoy: Knee injury resurfaces

McCoy (knee) didn't participate in Wednesday's practice, Steve Reed of the Associated Press reports. McCoy dealt with a knee issue in October but didn't have to miss any time. It's unknown whether this problem is related. The 31-year-old's practice status should be monitored leading up to Sunday's game against the Falcons, as he's a valuable run-stopper with pass-rushing upside (three sacks).

  • Panthers' Gerald McCoy: Limited in practice

McCoy (knee) was a limited participant in Thursday's practice, Steve Reed of the Associated Press reports. McCoy has customarily received veteran rest days this season due to a lingering knee injury, so it's possible that his reps are being managed as a precaution. The veteran wasn't able to shake the issue during Carolina's bye, but it doesn't currently appear as though he's in danger of missing Sunday's contest against the 49ers. If McCoy is indeed able to go, he'll work to make an impact against San Francisco's prominent rushing attack.

  • Gerald McCoy: Visiting Baltimore next

McCoy left Cleveland without a contract and will visit the Ravens on Tuesday, Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Cleveland has a talented roster and far more cap space, while Baltimore has the better defense and a much stronger track record of organizational success. The Panthers and Bengals, among other teams, are also believed to have interest in the 31-year-old defensive tackle. Tampa Bay released McCoy to free up $13 million in cap space, but he's still one of the better interior pass rushers in the league, coming off a 2018 campaign with six sacks and 21 quarterback hits (tied for 15th among all players) in 14 games.

  • Buccaneers' Gerald McCoy: Absent for start of OTAs

McCoy isn't present Tuesday for the start of OTAs, Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reports. McCoy has stayed away from the Buccaneers throughout the voluntary offseason program while his future remains in limbo. The team is switching to a 3-4 scheme under defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, and coach Bruce Arians has openly acknowledged the possibility of McCoy being traded or released. It seems a trade would be the best solution for both parties, but McCoy's $13 million base salary could make things tricky. Badly in need of cap space, the Bucs can cut McCoy without any dead-money charge if they're ultimately unable to find a trade.

  • Buccaneers' Gerald McCoy: Starts week with limited practice

McCoy (ankle/shoulder) was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice, Carmen Vitali of the team's official site reports. McCoy logged a robust complement of 55 snaps in the Week 14 loss to the Saints, when he was credited with a sole assisted tackle. The multi-time Pro Bowler has seen his production wane during the stretch run, as he's notched just one tackle apiece for three straight games overall. McCoy's limited participation is almost assuredly a form of maintenance for the nine-year veteran, as there's no indication at this point that his Week 15 status is in any jeopardy.

  • Buccaneers' Gerald McCoy: Not practicing Thursday

McCoy (calf) did not practice Thursday, Greg Auman of The Athletic reports. McCoy was able to log a limited participation in practice to begin the week, so his absence just a day later is somewhat unexpected. It seems likely that the defensive tackle's lack of practice is related to the calf injury which has caused him to miss two straight games, but it's worth noting that McCoy could have simply spent the day with his newborn child. The Buccaneers' final injury report of the week should shed some light on McCoy's chances of suiting up against the Panthers on Sunday.

  • Buccaneers' Gerald McCoy: May have torn biceps

McCoy fears he suffered a torn biceps during Sunday's 24-21 loss to the Lions, Roy Cummings of WFLA NewsChannel 8 reports. McCoy probably has a good idea of what a torn biceps feels like, given that he suffered the same injury in both 2010 and 2011, his first two seasons in the league. The already lowly Tampa Bay defense can't afford to lose its only real pass-rushing threat, but it appears that's what's going to happen. Expect McCoy to head in for an MRI on Monday, with the Buccaneers revealing the extent of his injury soon thereafter.
