Kaepernick and Panthers safety Eric Reid have resolved their pending grievances with the NFL, subject to a confidentiality agreement.
Kaepernick and Reid presumably will receive financial settlements for undisclosed amounts, thus ending their lengthy legal battle in a collusion case against the league. The latter recently inked a three-year deal with the Panthers, while the former hasn't been signed since he opted out of his contract with the 49ers in March 2017. This could pave the way for the 31-year-old quarterback to resume his football career, though he'll still have a hard time finding a contract that accurately reflects his on-field value. It doesn't help that Kaepernick hasn't played in a game since Week 17 of the 2016 season.
The Seahawks are exploring whether Kaepernick is a fit as a backup to starting quarterback Russell Wilson, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Since opting out of his contract in March 2017, Kaepernick has remained a free agent, despite a few organizations expressing interest in the QB. The Seahawks were among the interested parties, but ultimately he didn't land a gig last May. At the time, coach Pete Carroll explained away the dalliance, saying Kaepernick is "a starter in this league, and I can't imagine somebody won't give him a chance to play." On this occasion, Carroll and general manager John Schneider would like Kaepernick "to consider how he wants to proceed on everything," even his well-known national anthem protests from the 2016 season, per Rapoport. The latter point may be the one that decides his playing fate, as he's in the midst of a collusion grievance against the NFL, according to UPI.com. However the process plays out, Kaepernick's prospects in the NFL seem to be hanging on by a thread.
Kaepernick is scheduled to meet with the Seahawks on Wednesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Kaepernick had previously indicated that he hoped to land with a team who would give him an opportunity to compete for a starting job, but that won't be a realistic goal in Seattle, where Russell Wilson is entrenched as the long-term starter. Even so, Kaepernick would represent an excellent insurance policy behind Wilson, as he offers similar dual-threat skills. The Seahawks already have developmental quarterbacks Trevone Boykin and Jake Heaps behind Wilson on the depth chart, but Kaepernick would represent a significant upgrade over both signal callers.
Kaepernick still hopes to find an opportunity to compete for a starting job, ESPN.com reports.
Kaepernick seemingly understands he'll have to settle for a salary well below the $14.5 million he walked away from in San Francisco, but he does still hope to get paid like a low-end starter or high-end backup -- which may be wishful thinking at this point. There really isn't an obvious fit, but Cleveland, Houston and Denver could all be options, depending on what happens with Tony Romo and the upcoming NFL Draft. It won't be surprising if Kaepernick remains unsigned into May or June.
Niners GM John Lynch acknowledged that the team is unlikely to re-sign Kaepernick, who recently opted out of the final year of his contract, The San Jose Mercury News reports.
Kaepernick's decision to opt out was seemingly made for non-financial reasons, as he walked away from $14.5 million without any assurance of finding a similar deal. A return to San Francisco at a lower price was initially considered possible, but it seems highly unlikely now that the team has added Brian Hoyer and Matt Barkley. Kaepernick put up decent numbers for a woeful 49ers squad last season, but his injury history, social activism and track record of inconsistent performance are all factors that may dissuade teams from taking a shot on the 29-year-old. He should still eventually be able to find work as a backup -- or a chance to compete for a starting job -- assuming he's willing to settle for a much smaller salary than he's grown accustomed to.
Kaepernick announced Wednesday that he would opt out of the final season of his contract with the 49ers, ESPN.com's Nick Wagoner reports.
In what was a widely-anticipated decision, Kaepernick will become a free agent for the first time in his career, affording the 49ers approximately $14.5 million in cap room in the process. After spending a good portion of 2015 in a backup role behind Blaine Gabbert, Kaepernick made 11 starts in 2016 and was quite productive from a statistical standpoint, posting a 90.7 passer rating and a 16:4 touchdown-to-interception ratio while also contributing 468 yards on the ground. It's unclear if other teams around the league view Kaepernick, who went only 1-10 as a starter last season, as a viable No. 1 quarterback, but now that he's a free agent, his acquisition cost would likely be lower than some of the other veteran signal callers who are expected to be available this offseason via trade.
Kaepernick completed 17 of 22 passes for 215 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's loss to Seattle. He also rushed for 16 yards and fumbled twice, losing one, during the contest.
Kaepernick threaded the needle to tight end Garrett Celek for a nine-yard score late in the fourth quarter, bringing the 49ers' upset bid within a score. It was an either wise efficient yet unspectacular outing for Kaepernick, which can be said for much of his season. The dual threat set career marks in touchdown:interception ratio (4:1) and yards per carry (6.8), but managed to pilot just one win as a starter for an oft-anemic San Francisco team. With change at the top likely for the 49ers, Kaepernick will quite possibly be another coach's project to try to retool in 2017.
Kaepernick completed 28 of 38 passes for 266 yards, two touchdowns and a pick in Saturday's win over the Rams. He added 15 yards, a touchdown and a two-point conversion on the ground.
After a relatively quiet game, Kaepernick exploded in the fourth quarter with a touchdown scamper, scoring pass and gutsy two-point dive in the game's closing minutes. It will go down as a season to forget for the 49ers, Saturday representing just the team's second win and first since Week 1's victory over the Rams. However, Kaepernick has had a quiet yet efficient return with a 14:4 touchdown:interception ratio on the season and four games of a quarterback rating over 90 in his last six outings. How he and head coach Chip Kelly wrap up the season against an uneven Seahawks team might go a long way in defining both their futures in San Francisco.
Kaepernick completed 20 of 33 passes for 183 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 41-13 loss at Atlanta. He also had three carries for 21 yards.
In a common trend of many games this season, Kaepernick had a nice first half, tossing both of his touchdowns, but completed just five of 12 passes for 40 yards in the second half. He'll try to right the ship next week against the Rams.
Kaepernick completed 15 of 26 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's game against the Jets. He added 23 yards on three carries in the 23-17 loss.
Kaep helped his team race out to a 14-point advantage in the firs quarter, but the offense sputtered thereafter and managed just three points the rest of the way as the Jets eventually came back to win in overtime. His miserable 5.1 yards per attempt hardly inspired confidence from the coaching staff, and Kaepernick's grasp on the starting job could be in peril heading into next week's matchup with the Falcons.
Kaepernick will start at quarterback in Sunday's game against the Jets.
Kaepernick was pulled from last week's game against the Bears in favor of Blaine Gabbert after three ineffective quarters, but offensive coordinator Curtis Modkins announced Tuesday that the 49ers would go back to Kaepernick in Week 14. Kaepernick will look to get back on track against a Jets team that was lit up for 575 yards and six scores through the air over the last two weeks.
Kaepernick completed one of five passes for four yards and rushed six times for 20 yards in three quarters before being pulled Sunday in Chicago.
Kaepernick mustered all of four passing yards while getting sacked five times for negative-25 yards through three quarters before being replaced by Blaine Gabbert. It would be nice to blame his struggles on the steady snowfall, but Bears quarterback Matt Barkley wasn't having too many problems carving up the 49ers defense with 10.7 yards per attempt in the same conditions. After the game, coach Chip Kelly stated that the move was simply to light a spark under the offense and not necessarily an indication of a depth chart change. Kaepernick likely built up enough goodwill prior to Sunday to remain the team's starter against the Jets next week.
Kaepernick completed 29 of 46 passes for 296 yards with three touchdowns and an interception in Sunday's 31-24 loss to the Dolphins. He also gained 113 yards on 10 rushes.
This was 2012-quality Kap on Sunday, and he came just a couple of yards short of the goal line as time expired, narrowly missing the opportunity to send the game into overtime. Kaepernick turned it on in the fourth quarter in particular after the Niners fell behind 31-14 midway through the period, driving the team from its own 38 to the Dolphins' six-yard line in the final 1:44 of the game and converting a fourth-down play in the process. The sixth-year pro's rushing total was his best of the season. It marked the first time he'd eclipsed the 100-yard mark on the ground since ripping through the Chargers for 151 yards in Week 16 of the 2014 campaign. He'll look to preserve the positive momentum he generated in defeat when he and the 49ers try to avert a franchise-record 11th consecutive loss in a Week 13 road tilt against the Bears.
Kaepernick completed 16 of 30 passes for 206 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 30-17 loss to the Patriots. He also ran four times for 32 yards.
Despite getting sacked five times in the first half, Kaepernck performed well, completing 8 of 9 passes for 116 yards and a touchdown. He struggled in the second half, although he did manage to toss a 13-yard touchdown to Shaun Draughn with about two minutes left in the game. The elusive QB had to deal with extremely wet weather the entire contest, so things could have been worse. Next week, Kaepernick will face the Dolphins in Miami.
Kaepernick completed 17 of 30 passes for 210 yards and a touchdown, and added 55 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries in Sunday's 23-20 loss to the Cardinals.
Kaepernick exceeded expectations against the stingy Cardinals pass defense, topping 200 passing yards for the second time in four starts. He also added his first rushing score of the season, making up for a lack of productivity by the rest of the 49ers ground game. The dual-threat quarterback has been trending up lately, but a lack of weapons to throw to continues to cap his upside.
Kaepernick completed 24 of 39 passes for a season-high 398 yards, with two touchdowns and an interception in Sunday's 41-23 loss to the Saints. He also had five carries for 23 yards and lost a fumble at one point.
Kaepernick had a monster first half, with nearly 300 passing yards and both of his touchdown passes, but struggled in the second half, leading the 49ers to just three points. He had a couple of big pass plays, finishing with an impressive 10.2 YPA, although a lot of the damage came on yardage after the catch. In any case, Sunday's performance was Kaepernick's best of the season. He'll have a much tougher test next week, however, against a stingy Cardinals' defense.
Kaepernick is anticipated by head coach Chip Kelly to keep the 49ers' starting quarterback job following the team's Week 8 bye, Cam Inman of The Mercury News reports.
Kaepernick has gone 0-2 since taking over for Blaine Gabbert, but San Francisco's shortcomings stretch far beyond the quarterback position. While Kaepernick failed to complete 18 of his 34 passing attempts and committed two turnovers Sunday against the Buccaneers, he also gained 84 yards on the ground. That running ability has pleased Kelly since Kaepernick became the starter, and he's expected to retain the position once the 49ers reconvene after this week's bye.
Kaepernick completed just 16 of 34 passes for 143 yards with a touchdown, interception and fumble in Sunday's 34-17 loss to Tampa Bay. He did manage nine carries for 84 yards as a runner.
Making his first home start of the season, Kaepernick helped fantasy owners on the ground, but really struggled as a passer. A week after utilizing speedster Torrey Smith, the duo hooked up just one time for 17 yards. He had a shot at a touchdown pass in the fourth quarter, but Garrett Celek could not come down with the ball at the edge of the goal line. The 49ers will be on their bye next week, before a fantasy-friendly matchup with the Saints in Week 9.
Kaepernick will remain the 49ers' starting quarterback this Sunday against the Buccaneers.
Kaepernick made his first start of the season in Sunday's loss to the Bills, completing 13 of 29 passes for 187 yards and a touchdown. He also ran eight times for 66 yards, but led San Francisco's offense to just 16 points. However, without a more attractive alternative considering Blaine Gabbert's struggles before him, Kaepernick will maintain the 49ers' starting gig versus Tampa Bay this Sunday, when he'll hope another week at the helm results in an improved performance.
Kaepernick got the start under center against the Bills on Sunday, completing 13 of 29 pass attempts for 187 yards and a touchdown. He added 66 yards on eight rush attempts in the 45-16 loss.
Offseason trade rumors, health concerns, contract reconstruction and a preseason social protest made Kaepernick one of the most talked about quarterbacks this season despite not throwing a regular season pass. All of that is in the past now that he has officially made his first start of the 2016 campaign. The results weren't pretty, as Kaepernick was just as ineffective as Blaine Gabbert running the San Francisco offense. He did show some early promise, dialing up Torrey Smith for a 51-yard touchdown in the first half and exhibiting his athleticism on several designed and improvised scrambles. But when the 49ers' porous defense began giving up chunks of points in the second half, he wasn't able to make the necessary throws to keep his team in the game. From a fantasy perspective, Kaepernick will have value due to his ability to run the ball effectively, but his ceiling won't be very high if he is completing less than 50 percent of his passes.
