Montreal at Edmonton

Oilers get goals from seven players to rout free-falling Canadiens wire reports

EDMONTON, Alberta -- For a change, the Edmonton Oilers had fun in a Rexall Place blowout.

Ales Hemsky, Dustin Penner, Andrew Cogliano and Kyle Brodziak each had a goal and an assist and the Oilers extended Montreal's road losing streak to seven games, pounding the Canadiens 7-2 on Wednesday night.

Beaten 9-2 by Chicago and 10-2 by Buffalo at home this season, the Oilers enjoyed being on the other side of a drubbing.

"We've had our fair share of tough losses in this building so it was nice to see one go the other way," Brodziak said.

Sam Gagner, Zack Stortini and Liam Reddox also scored to help the Oilers snap a two-game skid and tie Vancouver for eighth place in the Western Conference.

"It was a big game for us confidence-wise," defenseman Sheldon Souray said after his first game against his old team. "We didn't play the prettiest of games, but we worked hard and got pucks to the net. We did things that we said we wanted to do."

Mathieu Dandenault and Francis Boullion scored for Montreal. The Canadiens have lost nine of their past 11 games to fall into sixth place in the Eastern Conference.

"You can talk for days and months and weeks, but it's what you do on the ice that counts," Montreal coach Guy Carbonneau said.

"We can talk about bad bounces and breaks, like the fifth one, but it seems to happen a lot in the past month, and we're going to have to work on that. Obviously, I'm really disappointed by some of the efforts that we've had."

Montreal captain Saku Koivu was at a loss to explain the Canadiens' slide.

"It's been going on for a while, and for the last three games, the way we've done it, it's not fun to be a part of," Koivu said. "I don't have a solution right now, but it's not just going to take one or two guys."

  • Edmonton defenseman Denis Grebeshkov had to be helped off the ice early in the second after being run feet-first into the boards by Tomas Plekanec. Grebeshkov didn't return.
  • The game was the 3,000th road game in Montreal franchise history, and the Canadiens' first at Rexall Place since Dec. 15, 2005.
