  • Stephen Gionta: Becoming scout

Gionta will join the Lightning as a professional scout, ending his professional career.

Over the course of an eight-year NHL career, Gionta logged 301 games for the Devils and Islanders, in which he tallied 16 goals, 40 helpers and 329 shots. The 35-year-old went undrafted coming out of Boston College and was able to break into the league after five seasons toiling away in the minors, putting together a solid career along the way.

  • Islanders' Stephen Gionta: Assigned to minor-league affiliate

The Islanders reassigned Gionta to AHL Bridgeport on Tuesday.

Robin Lehner may be dealing with an injury ahead of Tuesday's game against the Jets, so the Islanders needed to demote Gionta in order to make room for backup Christopher Gibson on their roster. The veteran forward will likely be recalled as soon as Lehner is ready to return.

  • Islanders' Stephen Gionta: Called up

Gionta was recalled from AHL Bridgeport on Thursday.

The Islanders have made a slew of transactions to work around lower-body injuries to Andrew Ladd and Casey Cizikas, as well as Matt Martin (upper body) -- just to name a few. Gionta has 56 points (16 goals, 40 assists) over 297 career contests between the Devils and Islanders.

  • Islanders' Stephen Gionta: Paves way for Cizikas' return

Gionta is no longer on the Islanders roster, as he cleared waivers Tuesday and Casey Cizikas (undisclosed) has since returned, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports.

Gionta signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Islanders last Saturday, so he's presumably bound for AHL Bridgeport, the team's top developmental affiliate.

  • Islanders' Stephen Gionta: Clears waivers, will remain with team momentarily

Gionta has cleared waivers but will likely stay with the Islanders until Casey Cizikas (undisclosed) returns from IR, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports.

Gionta was placed on waivers Monday with the current intentions likely in hand. The veteran forward has appeared in just one game for the Islanders so far this season but could be afforded a couple more before being sent to the AHL.

  • Islanders' Stephen Gionta: Waived by Isles

Gionta was waived by the Islanders on Monday Arthur Staple of The Athletic reports.

This is a sign that Casey Cizikas (undisclosed) is likely going to be returning soon. Gionta was just signed to a two-way contract Saturday, so he will likely be plying his trade in the AHL going forward.

  • Islanders' Stephen Gionta: Back with Islanders

Gionta agreed to terms with the Islanders on a one-year, two-way contract Saturday.

Gionta was preciously dropped from his PTO with the Islanders, but the veteran will get another chance with the Metropolitan Division club since Casey Cizikas (undisclosed) has been shifted to injured reserve. Of course, Gionta hasn't played since the 2016-17 season, when he scored once to go along with six assists over 26 games for the Isles.

  • Stephen Gionta: Back on open market

Gionta's PTO with the Islanders did not translate into an in-season contract with the club, per TSN.

Gionta was left off the Opening Night roster and is now an unrestricted free agent.

  • Islanders' Stephen Gionta: Snags tryout

Gionta picked up a professional tryout agreement from the Islanders ahead of training camp, Arthur Staple of The Athletic reports.

Gionta spent the 2017-18 campaign playing for AHL Bridgeport, for which he made 30 appearances and tallied just five points. The veteran will probably need all three of Jan Kovar, Casey Cizikas and Valtteri Filppula to struggle during camp in order to earn a spot on the 23-man roster.

  • Islanders' Stephen Gionta: On waiver wire

Gionta was placed on waivers by the Islanders on Monday.

Gionta split time between the NHL and AHL last season but was limited to a mere 33 combined games in which he recorded two goals and seven helpers. Once an 82-game NHL player, the 33-year-old is now a fringe role-player and probably will bounce between leagues again this year.

  • Stephen Gionta: Secures one-year, two-way deal

Gionta signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Islanders on Tuesday, Arthur Staple of Newsday reports. The deal is worth $650,000 in the NHL or $225,000 if he's sent to the minors.

Gionta inked a one-year AHL deal with Bridgeport, a minor-league affiliate of the Islanders, last October, and apparently he made a good enough impression on team brass to stick around a bit longer. Still, the 33-year-old has only chipped in 56 points (16 goals, 40 assists) over 296 career NHL games, and his small stature -- he's 5-foot-7 and 175 pounds -- has been a limiting factor.

  • Islanders' Stephen Gionta: Just one appearance since recall

Gionta has only played in one game since his recall from the AHL on Dec. 20.

Gionta is being used as the team's 13th or 14th forward, which means he will only see game action when a forward or two suffers a short-term injury. His first game of the season was Monday versus Buffalo where he registered a single shot on goal in just under 13 minutes of playing time.

  • Islanders' Stephen Gionta: Recalled from AHL

The Islanders called up Gionta from Bridgeport of the AHL on Wednesday, Arthur Staple of Newsday reports.

Some are wondering why the Islanders made this move. Is there an injury that the team hasn't made public yet? Will Gionta step in for one of several struggling forwards? We should find out more during practice Thursday. If Gionta plays Friday he will likely center the third or fourth line.

  • Islanders' Stephen Gionta: Signs minor league deal

Gionta (foot) agreed to terms on a one-year deal with AHL Bridgeport Sound on Wednesday.

League rules prevent a player from being released from a PTO while injured, which means Gionta should be ready to go for the AHL season. Although the center was unable to parlay his tryout into a contract with New York, he will be afforded the opportunity to show he still has something left in the tank in the minors. While with the Tigers, the veteran is eligible to sign with any NHL club, regardless of team affiliation.
