Josh Gorges: Announces retirement from NHL
On Monday, Gorges took to Twitter and Instagram to officially announce his retirement from hockey.
Gorges, 34, will hang up the skates after suiting up in 783 NHL games. His last NHL action came a season ago, as a member of the Sabres, with the stay-at-home defenseman recording a pair of assists in 34 games. Not known for his offensive contributions on the ice, the feisty blueliner posted 124 points while playing for three different teams over a 13-year career. He does not have plans to play overseas and calls Monday's decision " his retirement from the game of hockey."

Sabres' Josh Gorges: Plays just 34 games in 2017-18
Gorges pitched in two points in 34 games throughout 2017-18, while averaging 14:56 of ice time and securing 69 hits.
During the beginning of the season Gorges battled a lower-body injury which kept him sidelined for nine games, but even when he returned, he was in rotation between the press box and lineup throughout much of the year. The British Columbia native's 14:56 of playing time was the lowest of his career as well, and it seems that his days of going 20 or more minutes a night are fading. The two tallies were also a career low, but the limited played games and minutes were certainly factors. Gorges is set to be an unrestricted free agent, although he might need to take a pay cut from the $3.9 million he was payed this season if he wants to return.

Gorges will play against the Habs on Friday.
Gorges returns to the lineup to face his former team after sitting out the past four games as a healthy scratch. The veteran defender has played just 30 games this season, and his plodding, stay-at-home style of play just isn't effective anymore in a league that's gotten faster and faster. Gorges will be an unrestricted free agent this summer and it's highly unlikely he'll be re-signed. He can still be an effective shot blocker but is unlikely to contribute to any other fantasy categories.

Sabres' Josh Gorges: Healthy again
Gorges (illness) wasn't listed on the Sabres' injury report Friday.
Gorges will have to wait until Tuesday's game against the Devils for a chance to suit up, but he's been a healthy scratch a few times this season so it won't be a surprise if he remains out of the lineup. His value for the Sabres recently went up with the news of Zach Bogosian's season-ending hip injury, though, so Gorges could slot into more lineups after the break.

Gorges resumed skating Thursday, but he's evidently still not feeling well enough to return to game action. Either way, fantasy owners shouldn't need to keep tabs on the veteran blueliner's status, as his lack of offensive production -- two assists in 22 games this campaign -- keeps him from being a viable option in season-long and daily formats.

Gorges skated as the seventh defenseman Thursday.
Gorges played 15:15 at the Winter Classic and registered two hits and a blocked shot after sitting out the previous two games. It looks like he'll be the odd-man out again Thursday against Minnesota, with Justin Falk drawing into the lineup instead. Gorges' lack of speed is hurting his ability to keep up and be effective, and at this point of his career he is nothing more than a third-pairing defenseman.

Gorges also practiced on Tuesday, and after missing the past eight games, seems set to return Friday against Florida. The veteran defender sat out the first three games of the season as a healthy scratch before drawing into the lineup and impressed the coaching staff during a four-game stretch before getting hurt. Injuries are not new to Gorges, who's only played a full 82-game schedule just once in his career, but his presence should help stabilize a young defensive corps that's been ravaged by injury. His very limited offense leaves him with very little fantasy value except for leagues that count hits and blocked shots.

Gorges (lower body) took part in morning skate and could be ready for Friday's game against the Panthers, but has effectively been ruled out for Tuesday's contest against the Capitals, Mike Harrington of The Buffalo News reports.
Gorges will thus miss his eighth game in a row as a result of the ailment, but he appears close to a return. The Sabres could really use his help too, as the team is currently down five defenseman and has been struggling lately.

He is questionable for Friday's game against Vancouver and Victor Antipin will likely draw into the lineup if Gorges misses time.

Gorges played 15:06 and blocked five shots in his first appearance this season Thursday against San Jose.
Gorges sat out the first three games of the season as a healthy scratch before head coach Phil Housley was forced to make lineup changes in an effort to jump-start a Sabres squad still in search of its first win. Housley's emphasis on speed relegated Gorges to the press box, but Gorges showed he can still contribute, and tied Jake McCabe with the most ice time on the penalty kill. At 33 years old, and with a very limited skill set, Gorges is a good soldier but nothing more than a third-pairing defenseman at best. He might have to fight all season long to draw into the lineup. Gorges has little to no fantasy value at the moment.

Sabres' Josh Gorges: Left unprotected for expansion draft
Gorges was not among the players protected by the Sabres for the expansion draft.
Veteran teammate Zach Bogosian was also left unprotected, which may be a signal that new general manager Jason Botterill is looking to revamp a defense that ranked among the league's worst this past season. Gorges was eligible for the expansion draft because he has a modified no-trade clause rather than a no-movement clause, and has one year left on his contract worth $3.9 million. In three seasons with Buffalo, Gorges has appeared in 189 games, but like Bogosian hasn't been able to stay healthy and has seen his role slowly diminish. Bogosian may be the more enticing pick for Vegas because of his younger age and versatility, but Gorges' contract is much easier to stomach. If Gorges returns to Buffalo, he'll likely stay in a supporting role to Rasmus Ristolainen, Jake McCabe and Nathan Beaulieu, while remaining a staple on the penalty kill. If Gorges isn't selected by Vegas, he could still be dealt in a separate deal.

Sabres' Josh Gorges: Adds assist in win
Gorges recorded an assist, one shot on goal and two hits over 22:10 of ice time in Wednesday's win over Montreal.
Gorges' helper ended a nine-game point drought that dated back to March 16. He now has five assists and one goal on the year. This season has seen Gorges average just 18:28 of ice time -- down a full two minutes from last year's 20:28. In fact, the 32-year-old has seen a decrease in ice time in each of the past two seasons. That can likely be attributed to a combination of Gorges' age and limited offensive ability, not to mention the Sabres' glut of young defensemen.
