Canadiens' Steve Mason: Will be subjected to contract buyout
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Mason will be placed on unconditional waivers Saturday in order for the Canadiens to buy out the goalie's contract, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports.

The Habs acquired Mason's contract rights from the Jets -- along with forward Joel Armia, a 2019 seventh-round draft pick and 2020 fourth-rounder -- in exchange for blue-line prospect Simon Bourque on Saturday morning. However, it's abundantly clear that Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin had no intention of keeping Mason as a depth option behind Carey Price and Antti Niemi. Instead, by purchasing Mason's contract, Montreal will pony up $1.36 million to save just as much cap space over the next two seasons -- assuming he goes unclaimed, of course.

Canadiens' Steve Mason: Dealt to Montreal
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

The Jets traded Mason and forward Joel Armia to the Canadiens -- in addition to a 2019 seventh-round draft pick and 2020 fourth-rounder -- for blue-line prospect Simon Bourque on Saturday.

On paper, this looks like a huge return for the Habs, but there may be more than what meets the eye. After all, Mason was severely limited by a knee injury last season, and he posted pedestrian numbers -- including a 5-6-1 record, 3.24 GAA and .906 save percentage -- over 13 games. It's been widely speculated that Winnipeg has sold off so many assets in a cap-saving measure to try and retain top-six center Paul Stastny, who left a strong impression following his trade from the Blues.

Jets' Steve Mason: Dressed despite back injury
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Mason missed Game 4 of the Western Conference finals due to a back injury, Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun reports.

Mason told reporters he took a cortisone shot in order to dress for Game 5, which would seem to indicate there is not expected to be any long-term impact from his back problem. Given the 29-year-old's $4.1 million cap hit heading into the 2018-19 campaign, it wouldn't come as a surprise to see the Jets try to trade him, considering that's a lot of money to devote to a backup and the team still needs to sign Connor Hellebuyck to a new deal. In limited action this season, Mason was a serviceable No. 2, as he posted a 5-6-1 record with a 3.24 GAA. If the Ontario native is still with Winnipeg next season, fantasy owners can likely expect 25 games to be his ceiling.

Jets' Steve Mason: Reporting for backup duties
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Mason (undisclosed) will back up Connor Hellebuyck in Game 1 against the Predators on Friday, Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun reports.

Mason came in as relief for Hellebuyck in Game 3 of the conference quarterfinals and stopped all seven shots. Aside from that dud, Hellebuyck has been lights out and the Jets will rely on him if they want to hoist the Stanley Cup, so if Mason ultimately makes an appearance, it will signal that Winnipeg is in serious trouble.

Jets' Steve Mason: Working out on ice
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Mason (undisclosed) went through on-ice drills prior to the Tuesday's practice session, Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun reports.

Depending on your take, it's either good news that Mason was able to participate in drills sporting full gear or it's bad news that he is unable to join his teammates for practice. Ultimately, the Jets' pursuit of Lord Stanley's Cup starts and stops with No. 1 Connor Hellebuyck. Even once the veteran Mason is given the green light to return, he shouldn't be expected to get the starting nod as long as Hellebuyck is healthy.

Jets' Steve Mason: Not expected to dress
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Mason (lower body) isn't expected to dress for Friday's Game 5 against Minnesota, Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun reports.

The 29-year-old netminder suffered an apparent lower-body injury during morning skate, a development which prompted Winnipeg to reach out to AHL Manitoba and recall Michael Hutchinson, who's expected to serve as Connor Hellebuyck's backup Friday. The Jets can eliminate the Wild with a victory in Game 5. If they're able to do so, Mason will get some extra time to recover ahead of his team's second-round series.

Jets' Steve Mason: Status uncertain
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Mason (undisclosed) may not be available to serve as the backup against the Wild for Game 5 on Friday, Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun reports.

Mason was hurt during Friday's morning skate and a replacement -- likely Michael Hutchinson -- will need to be called up from AHL Manitoba if the veteran is unable to dress. Barring injury, Connor Hellebuyck was always going to be the starting netminder for Winnipeg throughout the postseason anyway.

Jets' Steve Mason: Enters in relief
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Mason played the third period of Game 3 against Minnesota on Sunday. He stopped all seven shots in relief of Connor Hellebuyck in the 6-2 loss.

Hellebuyck has been the man in Winnipeg all season long, winning 44 games in 67 appearances, so it's highly unlikely that Mason will get the nod for Game 4 on Tuesday.

Jets' Steve Mason: Makes 36 saves in Tuesday's OT win
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Mason made 36 saves in Tuesday's 5-4 overtime win over the Canadiens.

The win was only Mason's fifth of the season, but it was No. 50 for the Jets. Various injuries have limited the 29-year-old to only three games since Jan 9, but he's at least won all three of them. With Winnipeg still having a chance to catch Nashville at the top of the Western Conference standings, however, Mason will likely be back on the bench for the team's final two games of the season.

Jets' Steve Mason: Featured in goal Tuesday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Mason will start in goal Tuesday night against the Canadiens, Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun reports.

Mason hasn't played in close to a month, and the playoff-bound Jets reportedly will sit several key players in the upcoming contest, including team point leader Blake Wheeler, who has deposited 22 goals and 67 assists. Still, Montreal ranks 30th in league scoring, so the matchup could be much worse as he makes his return between the pipes.

Jets' Steve Mason: Ramping up activity
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Mason (knee) will work out in full Saturday, Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun reports.

The Jets reportedly will turn to breakout goalie Connor Hellebuyck in the upcoming contest against the Maple Leafs, but it does appear that Mason's on the verge of returning to action. Perhaps the ex-Flyer will draw into at least one of the four games in the final week of the regular season, but either way, Hellebuyck has run away with the starting job and goalies of his caliber typically don't take breaks in the postseason.

Jets' Steve Mason: May be available soon
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

According to coach Paul Maurice, Mason (knee) could be eligible to play next week, Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun reports.

While the news means Mason won't dress for the Jets' next two contests, he could suit up Monday or Tuesday against either Ottawa or Montreal, respectively. If the netminder does appear in one of those two games, it could be his last start of the season, as Winnipeg will no doubt use No. 1 Connor Hellebuyck exclusively in the postseason.

Jets' Steve Mason: Skates before practice
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Mason (knee) took the ice ahead of Monday's practice session, Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun reports.

Getting Mason on the ice in full pads is just the first step in his recovery process. The netminder will need to join his teammates in a full practice before be will be cleared to return to action. The veteran is on the early end of his original 2-3 week timeline and likely won't return to the lineup in a backup role until the playoffs.

Jets' Steve Mason: Undergoes knee procedure
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Mason will miss 2-3 weeks after having his knee scoped, Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun reports.

Any hope the Jets had of using Mason to fill in for starter Connor Hellebuyck during the last month of the regular season have all but evaporated. Michael Hutchinson figures to replace Mason on the No. 2 in Winnipeg for the time being. The veteran has been plagued by injuries all season and as a result, has played in a mere 12 contests this year, logging a 4-6-1 record and 3.18 GAA.

Jets' Steve Mason: Unavailable Saturday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Mason (lower body) will not be on the bench for Saturday's matchup with Philadelphia, Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun reports.

Mason -- who was just one game removed from a concussion -- sustained his lower-body injury in practice Thursday. It's likely the veteran would've otherwise seen at least one of the three games remaining on the Jets' current road trip -- or maybe even a few more starts to rest up traditional starter Connor Hellebuyck. Instead, recently recalled Michael Hutchinson will back up Hellebuyck and is expected to play either Monday or Tuesday against Washington or Nashville, respectively.

Jets' Steve Mason: Suffers lower-body issue
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Mason sustained a lower-body injury at Thursday's game-day skate, Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun reports.

It's a tough blow for Mason, who is just one game back from a concussion that previously kept him sidelined since early January. The veteran was unlikely to start against the Devils on Thursday anyway, but may be due to split a tough four-game road trip with starter Connor Hellebuyck. Winnipeg didn't provide a timeline for how long Mason might be out, but Michael Hutchinson will be emergency recalled from the minors to serve as the backup in the meantime.

Jets' Steve Mason: Stymies Blueshirts in return
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Mason saved 31 shots during Tuesday's 3-0 win over the Rangers.

This was Mason's first start since Jan. 9, as he missed nearly two months with a concussion. It was encouraging to see the veteran stand tall against the Rangers, as he entered Tuesday's start with an underwhelming .897 save percentage and 3.52 GAA through his previous 11 outings. Still, with Connor Hellebuyck locked in as the No. 1 goalie in Winnipeg, Mason's opportunities will probably be limited through the end of the season.

Jets' Steve Mason: In goal Tuesday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Mason will get the starting nod against the Rangers on Tuesday, Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun reports.

Mason will be making his first appearance between the crease since Jan. 9, when he faced off with the Sabres. Considering starter Connor Hellebuyck has played in 13 of the Jets' previous 14 outings, it shouldn't come as a surprise to see the team eager to give him a night off. In preparation for the postseason, the veteran Mason could see a few extra games, but the No. 1 job in Winnipeg clearly belongs to Hellebuyck.

Jets' Steve Mason: Activated from IR
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Mason (concussion) was removed from injured reserve Monday.

In a corresponding move, Michael Hutchinson was sent down to AHL Manitoba. That should mean that Mason will return to his role as Connor Hellebuyck's backup for Tuesday's game against the Rangers. The Jets are about to embark on a lengthy road trip, so you should expect the 29-year-old to see some action soon.

Jets' Steve Mason: Recalled from assignment
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Mason (concussion) was called up from his conditioning assignment with AHL Manitoba on Monday.

In his one start with the Moose, Mason recorded a win, despite allowing four goals on 22 shots for an .818 save percentage. The netminder will link up with the team on the road in New York. It's unclear whether the veteran will suit up against the Rangers on Tuesday, but fantasy owners can be encouraged by the fact that he is back with the team. Even once cleared, Connor Hellebuyck should see the majority of the minutes in the blue paint the rest of the way.
