Canadiens' Steve Mason: Dealt to Montreal
The Jets traded Mason and forward Joel Armia to the Canadiens -- in addition to a 2019 seventh-round draft pick and 2020 fourth-rounder -- for blue-line prospect Simon Bourque on Saturday.
On paper, this looks like a huge return for the Habs, but there may be more than what meets the eye. After all, Mason was severely limited by a knee injury last season, and he posted pedestrian numbers -- including a 5-6-1 record, 3.24 GAA and .906 save percentage -- over 13 games. It's been widely speculated that Winnipeg has sold off so many assets in a cap-saving measure to try and retain top-six center Paul Stastny, who left a strong impression following his trade from the Blues.

Canadiens' Steve Mason: Will be subjected to contract buyout
Mason will be placed on unconditional waivers Saturday in order for the Canadiens to buy out the goalie's contract, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports.
The Habs acquired Mason's contract rights from the Jets -- along with forward Joel Armia, a 2019 seventh-round draft pick and 2020 fourth-rounder -- in exchange for blue-line prospect Simon Bourque on Saturday morning. However, it's abundantly clear that Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin had no intention of keeping Mason as a depth option behind Carey Price and Antti Niemi. Instead, by purchasing Mason's contract, Montreal will pony up $1.36 million to save just as much cap space over the next two seasons -- assuming he goes unclaimed, of course.

Jets' Steve Mason: Dressed despite back injury
Mason missed Game 4 of the Western Conference finals due to a back injury, Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun reports.
Mason told reporters he took a cortisone shot in order to dress for Game 5, which would seem to indicate there is not expected to be any long-term impact from his back problem. Given the 29-year-old's $4.1 million cap hit heading into the 2018-19 campaign, it wouldn't come as a surprise to see the Jets try to trade him, considering that's a lot of money to devote to a backup and the team still needs to sign Connor Hellebuyck to a new deal. In limited action this season, Mason was a serviceable No. 2, as he posted a 5-6-1 record with a 3.24 GAA. If the Ontario native is still with Winnipeg next season, fantasy owners can likely expect 25 games to be his ceiling.

Jets' Steve Mason: Reporting for backup duties
Mason (undisclosed) will back up Connor Hellebuyck in Game 1 against the Predators on Friday, Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun reports.
Mason came in as relief for Hellebuyck in Game 3 of the conference quarterfinals and stopped all seven shots. Aside from that dud, Hellebuyck has been lights out and the Jets will rely on him if they want to hoist the Stanley Cup, so if Mason ultimately makes an appearance, it will signal that Winnipeg is in serious trouble.

Mason (undisclosed) went through on-ice drills prior to the Tuesday's practice session, Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun reports.
Depending on your take, it's either good news that Mason was able to participate in drills sporting full gear or it's bad news that he is unable to join his teammates for practice. Ultimately, the Jets' pursuit of Lord Stanley's Cup starts and stops with No. 1 Connor Hellebuyck. Even once the veteran Mason is given the green light to return, he shouldn't be expected to get the starting nod as long as Hellebuyck is healthy.

Mason (lower body) isn't expected to dress for Friday's Game 5 against Minnesota, Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun reports.
The 29-year-old netminder suffered an apparent lower-body injury during morning skate, a development which prompted Winnipeg to reach out to AHL Manitoba and recall Michael Hutchinson, who's expected to serve as Connor Hellebuyck's backup Friday. The Jets can eliminate the Wild with a victory in Game 5. If they're able to do so, Mason will get some extra time to recover ahead of his team's second-round series.

Mason played the third period of Game 3 against Minnesota on Sunday. He stopped all seven shots in relief of Connor Hellebuyck in the 6-2 loss.
Hellebuyck has been the man in Winnipeg all season long, winning 44 games in 67 appearances, so it's highly unlikely that Mason will get the nod for Game 4 on Tuesday.

Jets' Steve Mason: Makes 36 saves in Tuesday's OT win
Mason made 36 saves in Tuesday's 5-4 overtime win over the Canadiens.
The win was only Mason's fifth of the season, but it was No. 50 for the Jets. Various injuries have limited the 29-year-old to only three games since Jan 9, but he's at least won all three of them. With Winnipeg still having a chance to catch Nashville at the top of the Western Conference standings, however, Mason will likely be back on the bench for the team's final two games of the season.

Mason hasn't played in close to a month, and the playoff-bound Jets reportedly will sit several key players in the upcoming contest, including team point leader Blake Wheeler, who has deposited 22 goals and 67 assists. It's a tough blow for Mason, who is just one game back from a concussion that previously kept him sidelined since early January. Mason saved 31 shots during Tuesday's 3-0 win over the Rangers.
This was Mason's first start since Jan. 9, as he missed nearly two months with a concussion. It was encouraging to see the veteran stand tall against the Rangers, as he entered Tuesday's start with an underwhelming .897 save percentage and 3.52 GAA through his previous 11 outings. Still, with Connor Hellebuyck locked in as the No. 1 goalie in Winnipeg, Mason's opportunities will probably be limited through the end of the season.

Mason will be making his first appearance between the crease since Jan. 9, when he faced off with the Sabres. It's unclear whether the veteran will suit up against the Rangers on Tuesday, but fantasy owners can be encouraged by the fact that he is back with the team. Even once cleared, Connor Hellebuyck should see the majority of the minutes in the blue paint the rest of the way.
