What kind of season can be expected from Josh Barfield? - Eric Krantz, New York, NY
B.F.: I'm very excited about Barfield this season. I think he'll be selected in the same area as other young middle infielders such as Jorge Cantu, Jhonny Peralta and Robinson Cano on Draft Day 2007. I think He goes about .280-18-75-85-15 in his rookie season and evolves into a Fantasy superstar down the road.
I drafted Andy Pettite, Rich Harden, Jeremy Bonderman, Erik Bedard, Joe Blanton, Felix Hernandez, Brandon Claussen and Jake Westbrook. I'm thinking about picking up Ervin Santana and/or Shawn Chacon. I believe that Santana and Chacon have better chances of winning based on their teams, but I see a potential sleeper in Claussen and Westbrook seems to be ranked higher than Chacon and Santana on a lot of lists. Should I pick up either Chacon and/or Santana, and if so, which two pitchers should I drop? I am in a AL/NL mixed head-to-head league. -- Dan Gehr, Hamilton, OH
B.F.: I'm personally a huge Ervin Santana fan. I wouldn't even think about holding onto Claussen if Santana was sitting out there to be picked up. Santana has tremendous upside and a great spring. Normally, spring stats don't matter too much, but with a young pitcher it has to be considered if he really excels. Santana led all major leaguers with 29 strikeouts in spring training and earned four wins in seven starts. He's a gutsy kid that could be among the elite Fantasy pitchers as early as next season. Grab him immediately.
Why has Phil Nevin been practically ignored in drafts? He went undrafted in two leagues I am in. He's the clean up hitter on a high scoring team in a band box park. Should I pick up Nevin over T. Clark, Gibbons, Jacobs or Kotchman? -- Gary Payne
B.F.: Bottom line: Nevin is not the player he once was. He's had a hard time staying healthy throughout his career and hit rock bottom with a .237 average in 2005. This spring he hit five home runs, but also hit only .241. He should be owned in all AL-only leagues because he has 25-plus home run potential in that ballpark, but mixed leaguers could do better. I would say Gibbons, Jacobs and Kotchman all have more upside.
I'm the idiot that thought maybe Nomar can stay healthy and put up the type of numbers he did with the Sox. Here's my predicament - he's my third baseman and all I have on the bench is Aaron Boone. I'm in a 12 team mixed head-to-head league. Should I shift Cantu to third and trade Mussina for Brian Roberts (my other starters are Chris Carpenter, Jeremy Bonderman, Rich Harden, and Jeff Weaver and I have Chien-Ming Wang and Gustavo Chacin on the bench) to fill the Nomar void or should I just pick up Jose Castillo or Luis Gonzalez (Rockies) off waivers? Am I giving up too much by trading Mussina? I'm leaning towards the trade. Advice would help me tremendously. -- Darren Frye
B.F.: I would trade Mussina for Roberts even if Nomar didn't get hurt. A top-notch second baseman is more valuable than a mediocre Fantasy pitcher in a mixed league. Wang is a fine replacement to your staff and Roberts would be a great addition to your offense. If and when Nomar gets healthy, you'll find a place for him because of his position flexibility.
On my 5x5 roto team I have Delond Young and Roger Clemens as my reserves. How long should I keep them on my roster? I could probably drop Young and pick him up at a future date, but I am not sure if I really want to do this. -- Bill Meuwissen, Minneapolis, MN
B.F.: If you have the roster space, keep them both. You'll know if Clemens is returning in the next few weeks and he'll be among the most valuable pitchers in baseball if he does return. It's worth the risk. Young is a future superstar and will make a Fantasy impact in the near future. Don't drop him unless you need to pick someone up to start for you. I doubt any free agents in your league have more long-term potential if they are just going to sit on your bench anyway.
