James (ankle) was a modified participant in practice Sunday, Khobi Price of The Orange County Register reports.

James missed the Lakers' final two preseason games while dealing with an ankle sprain, but his participation in practice in any form is an encouraging sign. More clarity on his availability for Tuesday's Opening Night matchup against the Warriors is expected as the game approaches.
