Brewers third baseman Aramis Ramirez has decided to skip a minor-league rehab assignment and instead rejoin the team on Friday, reports Adam McCalvy of MLB.com. He has been sidelined with a left knee sprain since early April.
"I think management would always like a guy to go rehab, but a player has a right not to rehab," said manager Ron Roenicke, referring to the rule in the Collective Bargaining Agreement that allows players to skip rehab assignments. "So you work with whatever player it is, you explain things to him, and they have the decision."
Ramirez, 34, went 5-for-13 (.385) with three doubles in four games before being sidelined by the knee problem. He dealt with a similar injury during spring training. Ramirez hit .300/.360/.540 with 27 homers during his first season in Milwaukee.
The Brewers have been using veterans Alex Gonzalez and Yuniesky Betancourt at the hot corner during Ramirez's absence. The team's third basemen have combined to hit .241 with four homers and 13 RBI during that time.
