Brewers, Jonathan Lucroy agree to contract extension
The Milwaukee Brewers have agreed to a contract extension with catcher Jonathan Lucroy, reports CBSSports.com Insider Jon Heyman.
The Brewers have agreed to terms with catcher Jonathan Lucroy on a contract extension, reports CBSSports.com Insider Jon Heyman. The deal is for five years, buying out his arbitration years, and worth $13 million if he is a qualifies as a "Super Two" arbitration-eligible player and $11 million if he is not.
Last season, Lucroy hit .265/.313/.391, while the average NL catcher batted .250/.320/.388. As you can see, Lucroy was very close to the mean in terms of offensive production by positional standards. And "average" has value, of course. As well, at age 25, Lucroy may improve over the life of the deal.
Defensively, Lucroy is a capable catch-and-throw guy, and according to the work of Baseball Prospectus's Mike Fast, he's one of the best in baseball at framing pitches.
No, Lucroy's likely not a future star, but he is, in Simpons parlance, a "perfectly cromulent" major-league catcher. Now he's about to be paid like one.
