The Marlins have designated for assignment catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia, the team has announced

Saltalamacchia had been struggling severely at the plate this season, hitting .069 in 32 at-bats (one homer, one RBI).

He was recently benched and had expressed to the media his disagreement with the move.

Saltalamacchia went on paternity leave Friday, so the Marlins had called up from Triple-A New Orleans catcher Jhonatan Solano to fill in.

Jacob Realmuto had taken over the first-string catching duties from Saltalamacchia.

Saltalamacchia signed a three-year, $21 million contract with the Marlins in December 2013.
