Mets outfielder Marlon Byrd finished 2 for 5 with a pair of run-scoring singles during New York's 11-2 victory over San Diego on opening day Monday. After a 2012 campaign that was marked by a suspension for performance-enhancing drugs, Byrd made his Mets debut as the No. 5 hitter in the batting order and also patrolled right field.
A year ago, the 35-year-old recorded only three hits in his first 13 games with the Cubs before being shipped to the Red Sox. He finished the season with a career-low .210 average in just 47 games.
