The Mets have acquired two-time All-Star reliever Tyler Clippard from the Athletics in a trade, the A's announced. The return to the A's is right-handed pitcher Casey Meisner, who is currently in High-A.

METS get: ATHLETICS get:
Tyler Clippard P Casey Meisner

Clippard, 30, has 17 saves in 21 chances with a 2.79 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 38 strikeouts in 38 2/3 innings. Last season in the NL East (with Washington), Clippard had a 2.18 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 82 strikeouts in 70 1/3 innings in setup duty. He's been a stud closer and stud setup man, so the Mets have options when it comes to his role.

Jeurys Familia has been the closer since early in the season, saving 27 games in 31 chances with a 1.70 ERA. He has, however, blown his last two chances.

Regardless of how they decide to deploy Clippard, the move obviously strengthens the bullpen as a whole. Familia and Clippard have the ability to be a nasty back-end duo.

Meisner, 20, was the Mets' third-round pick in 2013. He started the season with Low-A Savannah, where he went 7-2 with a 2.13 ERA in 12 starts before being promoted. With High-A St. Lucie, he's 3-2 with a 2.83 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 23 strikeouts in 35 innings. The lanky righty is listed at 6-foot-7, 190 pounds.
