It's not especially surprising, but now it's especially official: the Rockies announced that they have designated 49-year-old lefty Jamie Moyer for assignment.
Right-hander Carlos Torres will replace Moyer on the active roster. Per MLB rules, the Rockies now have 10 days to trade or release Moyer (assuming they have no interest in outrighting him to the minors).
On the season, Moyer has a 5.70 ERA in 10 starts, and he's also given up six unearned runs on the season. As well, he leads the NL in hits allowed. While Moyer enjoyed some early success in 2012, his ERA for the month of May is a grisly 8.64. He did, however, become the oldest starting pitcher ever to record a win.
According to the AP, Moyer says he'd like to pitch again, but now he plans to return home and attend his son's high-school graduation.
If this is the end for Moyer, then he'll retire with a career record of 269-209, an ERA of 4.25, an ERA+ of 103, and more than $82 million in earnings across parts of 25 major-league seasons.
And this gives us the tidy rationale we need to link back to this celebratory work of art.
