WATCH: Yankees prospect makes Jim Edmonds-esque catch
Yankees outfield prospect Ben Gamel made one of the best catches of spring training Thursday. He robbed Russell Martin of extra bases with a diving catch near the warning track.
If you're a young player in spring training, you want the big-league coaching staff to remember you. You might not make the Opening Day roster, but play well enough and you'll put yourself in position for an early call-up.
On Thursday, outfield prospect Ben Gamel did something the Yankees coaching staff will remember. He robbed former Yankee Russell Martin with a Jim Edmonds-esque diving catch near the warning track in center field. Check this out:
I didn't think Gamel, the younger brother of former Brewers first baseman Mat Gamel, had a chance to get to that ball. It kept carrying and carrying, and yet there he was, making the catch.
The Grapefruit League and Cactus League seasons are only a week old now, but that is definitely one of the better defensive plays we've seen this spring. Gamel definitely gave the coaching staff something to remember.
The 23-year-old Gamel hit .300/.358/.472 with 28 doubles, 14 triples, 10 home runs, and 13 stolen bases in 129 games last season to earn a 40-man roster spot.
