Veteran infielder Jeff Keppinger has been designated for assignment by the White Sox despite being in the second year of a three-year contract that pays him $12 million.

The 34-year-old Keppinger has been sidelined this season as he recovers from shoulder surgery. He was serviceable as mostly a starter in 2013 with a .253 average and 40 RBI. He has played for seven major league teams since debuting in 2004.
