  • Phillies' Steve Geltz: Suspended 100 games

Geltz was suspended for 100 games due to his third positive test for a drug of abuse in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program, Chris Cotillo of SB Nation reports.

Geltzjoined the Phillies on a minor-league deal in January in hopes of winning a bullpen spot, but now will be ineligble to pitch until late in the season.

  • Phillies' Steve Geltz: Inks minor-league deal with Phillies

Geltz agreed to a minor-league contract with the Phillies on Tuesday, Chris Cotillo of SB Nation reports.

After latching on with the Dodgers prior to the 2017 campaign, Geltz proceeded to spend the entire season in the minors, posting a respectable 2.67 ERA and 29:12 K:BB across 27 innings of relief. He hasn't pitched in the majors since 2016 -- when he posted a 5.74 ERA across 26.2 innings with the Rays before being designated for assignment -- and figures to spend the year as organizational bullpen depth for the Phillies.

  • Dodgers' Steve Geltz: Signs minor league deal with Dodgers

Geltz signed a minor league deal with the Dodgers on Saturday, Chris Cotillo of SB Nation reports.

Geltz went from a good year in 2015 to being DFA'd by the Rays and outrighted by the Brewers in 2016, in case you need a reminder of the volatility of relievers. Geltz will likely work as organizational depth for the Dodgers bullpen.

  • Steve Geltz: Elects free agency

Geltz declined his assignment to Triple-A and elected to become a free agent on Wednesday.

This was a weird string of events, as the Brewers claimed Adam Walker, then DFA'd him to claim Geltz, then lost Walker on waivers and will now lose Geltz to free agency after designating him for assignment. He will look to catch on elsewhere as bullpen depth for 2017.

  • Brewers' Steve Geltz: Sent outright to Triple-A

Geltz was outrighted to Triple-A Colorado Springs on Friday.

The Brewers claimed the right-hander off waivers less than a week ago, but it seems that his career 4.23 ERA out of major league bullpens wasn't up to snuff of a player the Brewers wanted on their 40-man roster. If he sticks in the organization, he'll likely act as organizational bullpen depth.

  • Brewers' Steve Geltz: Claimed by Brewers

Geltz was claimed off waivers by the Brewers on Monday.

He has a 4.23 ERA and 23.1 percent strikeout rate in 104.1 big league innings, working primarily in mid-to-low leverage situations last year for the Rays. Look for him to pitch out of the middle of the Brewers' bullpen in 2017.

  • Rays' Steve Geltz: Designated for assignment

Geltz was designated for assignment by the Rays on Friday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Geltz worked himself into a prominent role in the Rays' bullpen in 2015, making 70 appearances and even recording a couple saves, but he evidently fell out of favor within the organization with a lackluster showing in 2016. He will now be subjected to waivers.

  • Rays' Steve Geltz: Called up by Rays

Geltz was called up by the Rays on Monday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports

Geltz made 22 appearances in relief for the Rays earlier this season, but posted a dreadful 6.86 ERA that easily could have been much worse, as he owns a .204 BABIP that led to a 8.53 FIP. Expanded rosters will allow the 28-year-old to return to the team, but look for the righty to be used primarily in low-leverage situations.

  • Rays' Steve Geltz: Clears waivers, optioned to Triple-A

Geltz cleared waivers and was officially optioned to Triple-A Durham on Wednesday, the Tampa Bay Times' Marc Topkin reports.

The Rays removed Geltz from the 40-man roster by designating him for assingment earlier this week, and he will remain with the club, providing organizational bullpen depth at Triple-A.

  • Rays' Steve Geltz: Designated for assignment

Geltz was designated for assignment on Monday.

The move allows the Rays to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Alex Cobb, who was activated from the 60-day DL as a corresponding move. After posting a decent season for the Rays in 2015, Geltz had a 6.86 ERA in 21 innings prior to being designated for assignment.

  • Rays' Steve Geltz: Optioned to Triple-A

Geltz was sent back to Triple-A Durham following Sunday's game against the Astros, Steve Carney of 620 WDAE reports.

The move opens up room on the 25-man roster for the anticipated return of Alex Cobb (elbow) from the disabled list Monday. The 28-year-old reliever allowed a run on three hits in Sunday's contest, but should still be a candidate to rejoin the club when rosters expand in September.

  • Rays' Steve Geltz: Will be recalled Sunday

Geltz will be recalled from Triple-A Durham.

To make room for Geltz, the Rays have optioned Mike Mahtook to the Durham. In 21 games for the Rays this season, Geltz has a 6.75 ERA and given up 10 homers in 20 innings.

  • Rays' Steve Geltz: Optioned to Triple-A

The Rays optioned Geltz to Triple-A Durham following Friday's game.

Geltz was sent to Durham to open up a roster spot for Oswaldo Arcia, whom the Rays claimed off waivers Friday. Geltz posted an unsightly 6.75 ERA over 21 appearances out of the Rays' bullpen this season, but he appeared in 70 games with the big club last year, so he will be among the top options next time the team needs to call up an arm from the minors.

  • Rays' Steve Geltz: Hit hard in Tuesday appearance

Geltz, who pitched well in his first two appearances after getting called up from Triple-A last Friday, gave up three hits (including two homers) and three earned runs over an inning in Tuesday's 6-0 loss to the Indians. He struck out two.

The 28-year-old righty had fired 1.1 innings of shutout, no-hit ball over his first two trips to the mound upon his return, but was touched up by the Indians on Tuesday. Things got started on the wrong foot when Geltz gave up an inning-opening single to Mike Napoli, and then went significantly downhill when he surrendered subsequent back-to-back homers to Jose Ramirez and Juan Uribe. While he finished the frame strong with consecutive whiffs of Yan Gomes and Tyler Naquin, the damage was already done. Geltz's rather unorthodox stat line in his latest major league stint includes an 11.57 ERA but four strikeouts over just 2.1 innings as well.

  • Rays' Steve Geltz: Recalled from Triple-A

Geltz was recalled by the Rays on Friday, the Tampa Bay Times' Marc Topkin reports.

He appears to be a different pitcher than he was a year ago, when he had the look of a potential relief ace. Now, he has a 6.06 ERA and just 12 strikeouts in 16.1 innings in relief at Triple-A, and figures to pitch mostly in low-leverage situations out of the Rays' bullpen.

  • Rays' Steve Geltz: Optioned to Triple-A

Geltz was optioned to Triple-A Durham on Sunday.

Geltz heads to Durham after pitching 15.1 innings with the Rays, recording 12 strikeouts and a 5.28 ERA. The Rays have yet to announce who will take Geltz's spot on the roster.

  • Rays' Steve Geltz: Surrenders go-ahead homer in ninth inning of Sunday loss

Geltz surrendered a go-ahead two-run homer to Danny Valencia in the ninth inning of Sunday's 7-6 loss to the A's. He also struck out a batter.

Geltz continues his rollercoaster season out of the pen, seemingly alternating rough outings with solid ones the past few appearances. He fell victim to the red-hot Danny Valencia in the ninth Sunday, after Xavier Cedeno had allowed Billy Burns to reach base on a double before Geltz was summoned. Valencia then promptly launced a 434-foot blast to left center on the 28-year-old reliever's first offering, giving Oakland a lead they wouldn't reliquish. The homer was alarmingly the third given up by Geltz over his last four appearances, and the fifth overall over his 13.2 innings this season.

  • Rays' Steve Geltz: Surrenders three-run homer in Monday defeat

Geltz surrendered two hits in 1.2 innings in Monday's 5-2 loss to the Mariners, along with a three-run homer. He was only charged with one earned run however, and also struck out two batters.

The 28-year-old reliever inherited Leonys Martin and Norichika Aoki as baserunners after they'd been issued free passes by Dana Eveland, and then promptly gave up a 391-foot homer to right-field to Ketel Marte, the first batter he faced. It was another up-and-down appearance for Geltz, who's surrendered an earned run in two of his last three outings, and has seen his ERA climb from 3.38 to 4.09 since the calendar turned to May.

  • Rays' Steve Geltz: Surrenders run in short stint Thursday

Geltz surrendered a hit, an earned run and a walk over 0.2 innings of work in Thursday's 6-0 loss to the Indians.

The 28-year-old right-hander came on in the sixth inning, a batter after starter Chris Archer had surrendered a two-run shot to Marlon Byrd. Geltz promptly yielded a solo homer to Rajai Davis that made the score 4-0, before getting two outs to finish off the frame. The veteran reliever was one of various members of the Rays bullpen that was initially believed to be in line for some save opportunities in the wake of Brad Boxberger's abdomen injury, but Thursday's outing marked his first appearance since Apr. 5. Geltz has worked 2.1 innings over his three trips to the mound, with Davis' homer representing the first hit and run of the season on his ledger.

  • Rays' Steve Geltz: Candidate for saves in Tampa Bay

Geltz is a candidate for save opportunities with Brad Boxberger (abdomen) expected to miss eight weeks. "We have a number of guys that could try to fill that void for the first month of the year," manager Kevin Cash told the Tampa Tribune. "We'll have some opportunities that will present itself for more bullpen arms."

Alex Colome seems like the best bet for saves, as he was slated for the setup role before Boxberger went down, but Cash is keeping the door open for Geltz, Xavier Cedeno, and even Danny Farquhar and Ryan Webb to possibly see some chances. Geltz turned in a rather pedestrian (for a back-end arm) 13.0% K-BB% last season and had a 4.32 second-half ERA.
