Player Outlook
Aaron Nola shocked many when he decided to re-up with the Phillies for seven years rather than test the free agent waters in what was a lucrative market with multiple big market teams looking for pitching. Then again, Nola has pitched very well at Citizens Bank Ballpark over the years whereas his struggles have more recently been away from Philly. You may be surprised to learn that Nola pitched to a 3.29 ERA with 12 homers in 87.2 innings at home in 2023, but had a 5.43 ERA with 20 homers in 106 innings on the road last season. He is a rare bird in that he has not missed a single start since missing a handful of starts in the 2017 season and has pitched at least 180 innings in each of the past five full seasons. He has become rather stingy with walks in recent years while continuing to get 200+ strikeouts year after year. 2021 and 2023 have a familiar look to them and Nola absolutely has the ability to bounce back in 2024 as he did in 2022 while deciding to continue his career where it began.

The 31-year-old was much sharper Wednesday, fanning six batters and limiting the Twins to just one run, a solo home run by Matt Wallner in the second inning. The right-hander notched his 15th quality start of the season Wednesday, tied for third in the major leagues. Nola now owns a 3.44 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 126:31 K:BB across 130.2 innings. • Phillies' Aaron Nola: Shuts down Dodgers

Nola (11-4) picked up the win Thursday, allowing one run on four hits and two walks across six innings against the Dodgers. He struck out nine. The lone run against Nola came off the bat of Gavin Lux, who went yard to lead off the fifth inning. Nola has generated at least eight strikeouts in three consecutive appearances and has posted a quality start in 10 of his last 11 outings. The 31-year-old owns the second most wins in baseball to go along with a 3.38 ERA across 119.2 innings. However, his 8.7 K/9 would be his worst tally since his rookie year in 2015.

  • Phillies' Aaron Nola: Delivers quality start

Nola (10-4) yielded three runs on five hits over six innings Friday, striking out eight and earning a win over Atlanta. Nola got through three shutout frames before coughing up a two-run shot to Austin Riley in the fourth inning. Ozzie Albies then knocked a solo homer in the sixth. It was the first time that Nola gave up multiple home runs since May 31, and he allowed just three in the entire month of June. He forced a season-high 21 swinging strikes Friday, with 10 coming on the knuckle curve. Nola has delivered a quality start in nine of his last 10 outings, including in four straight. During that 10-start stretch, the veteran righty has posted a 3.34 ERA while going 6-2. Nola will carry a 3.48 ERA into his next outing, which is currently lined up to be at home against the Dodgers.

Nola's 8-3 on the year with a 3.54 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 84:25 K:BB across 15 starts (94 innings). He's currently lined up to face the Tigers on the road early next week in his next outing.

It's certainly an encouraging outing for Nola after he'd posted a subpar 5.59 ERA over his previous two starts (9.2 innings). The 30-year-old right-hander lowered his ERA to 3.10 on the season with a 1.09 WHIP and 55:15 K:BB through nine outings (58 innings). • Phillies' Aaron Nola: Cruises to third win

Nola (3-1) allowed two runs on four hits and one walk over eight innings to pick up the win Sunday against the White Sox. He struck out seven. Nola allowed a first-inning two-run homer to Eloy Jimenez but settled in thereafter, allowing just three more baserunners over the next seven innings. This season has been a steady climb for Nola, who struggled in his first start but has worked progressively deeper into each start, culminating with his eight-inning effort Sunday. One concern for Nola moving forward is that he's already allowed six home runs this year after allowing a career-high 32 last season. The veteran righty will take a 3.16 ERA and 1.09 WHIP into his next start, tentatively scheduled to take place during a weekend set in San Diego against the Padres.

  • Phillies' Aaron Nola: Twirls gem against Rockies

Nola didn't factor into the decision Monday, allowing one run on four hits and a walk with nine strikeouts over 7.1 innings against Colorado. Nola turned in his best start of the season Monday, picking up a second consecutive quality start and surpassing four strikeouts for the first time. The only damage against Nola came in the fifth inning when Michael Toglia clubbed a solo home run. Although Nola owns a 3.47 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP, he's been particularly susceptible to the long ball (1.9 HR/9 in 2024), a trend worth monitoring after giving up 1.5 HR/9 in 2023. Nola's projected to cap off a two-start week Sunday against the White Sox.

  • Phillies' Aaron Nola: Goes six innings in second win

Nola (2-1) earned the win Wednesday, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out three. After he was tagged for six earned runs in an Opening-Day loss, Nola's held opponents to just two runs on five hits over 11.2 innings in his subsequent two outings. He'll look for a third straight win in his next start, currently slated as a home matchup with the Rockies early next week.

  • Phillies' Aaron Nola: Earns first win of season

Nola (1-1) picked up the win Friday over the Nationals, pitching 5.2 scoreless innings and allowing two hits and four walks. He struck out four. Although Nola collected his first win of the season, he still looked relatively rusty and was lucky to be facing a weak Nationals lineup. His entire pitch arsenal looked diminished as he averaged only 91.1 mph on his fastball, down 1.6 mph from his average velocity in 2023. Nola is slated to start against the Cardinals on the road in his next outing.

  • Phillies' Aaron Nola: Rough start to season

Nola (0-1) took the loss Saturday as the Phillies fell 12-4 to Atlanta, coughing up seven runs on 12 hits and a walk over 4.1 innings. He struck out three. Five of the hits off Nola went for extra bases, including homers by Ozzie Albies and Matt Olson. The 30-year-old right-hander threw 83 pitches (54 strikes) before exiting, and while it was far from an ideal start to the campaign, Nola has still been one of the most reliable pitchers in the game since emerging as a regular part of the Philadelphia rotation, striking out more than 200 batters in each of his last five full seasons. Nola will look to bounce back against a much less dangerous opponent next weekend on the road against the Nationals.

  • Phillies' Aaron Nola: Inks seven-year deal with Philly

Nola and the Phillies agreed to a seven-year, $172 million contract Sunday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. Phillies GM Dave Dombrowski indicated the organization's top priority this offseason was re-signing Nola, and the two sides didn't take long to come to terms on a long-term deal. The 30-year-old right-hander's 4.46 ERA in 2023 was a bit underwhelming, but he's been one of the more reliable pitchers in baseball over the past six years with at least 32 starts in each full season. He's also topped 200 strikeouts in each of those campaigns and appears poised to finish out his career in Philadelphia.

Nola allowed three hits over six scoreless innings to earn the win in Tuesday's 10-0 victory over the Diamondbacks in Game 2 of the NLCS. He struck out seven. Nola followed up a solid outing against Atlanta in the NLDS with another gem, this time taking advantage of a quiet Diamondbacks offense to cover the bulk of a shutout. Key for Nola in this contest was the success of commanding his curveball, which averaged a 32.7 called plus swinging-strike percentage during the regular season but was up to a 39 percent mark in Tuesday's start. In the playoffs so far, the right-hander has a tidy 0.96 ERA and 0.75 WHIP with 19 strikeouts across 18.2 innings.
