Twins' Gilberto Celestino: Placed on 10-day IL
Celestino (thumb) was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday. He injured his thumb in early March and at the time was expected to be out six-to-eight weeks. He was likely set to begin the season at Triple-A, but he was placed on the major-league injured list. He'll likely be moved to Triple-A when healthy. After posting just a .592 OPS with four homers and four steals in 145 games over the last two seasons, he'll likely need to re-establish himself in the minors before given another shot in Minnesota.... Twins' Gilberto Celestino: Reclaims everyday role
Celestino will start in center field and bat sixth in Monday's game against the Guardians. After back-to-back games on the bench Sept. 10 and 11, Celestino appears to have re-emerged as a regular in the Minnesota outfield. He'll start in center for the seventh time in eight games after going 3-for-18 with a double, three walks and three runs over his past six starts. Expect Celestino continue to hold down a near-everyday role until the Twins return Byron Buxton (hip) from the injured list.... See More ... See Less -
Twins' Gilberto Celestino: Sits against righty again
Celestino is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Guardians. For the second game in a row, the righty-hitting Celestino finds himself on the bench against a righty (Shane Bieber). After slashing a mediocre .202/.302/.236 in his 17 games since Byron Buxton (hip) was placed on the injured list Aug. 23, Celestino may have faded into a short-side platoon role in center field with the lefty-hitting Jake Cave.... Celestino went 1-for-4 with a solo home run, an additional run scored and a walk in Tuesday's 9-0 win over the Royals. Celestino had the only long ball in the game, a fourth-inning blast to extend the Twins' lead to 3-0. It's his second homer in his last five games, though those are his only two hits across 12 at-bats in that span. The 23-year-old is slashing .265/.323/.346 with two homers, 13 RBI, 20 runs scored, seven doubles and a triple through 203 plate appearances. Celestino went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run and a walk in Friday's 4-0 win over the Angels. Celestino opened the scoring in the second inning with a homer off Angels starter Patrick Sandoval. This was Celestino's first long ball of the season and just the third of his major-league career in 98 games. The 23-year-old outfielder has seen his playing time slip with the Twins' outfield regaining some healthy bodies. He's slashing .273/.330/.341 with 12 RBI, 18 runs scored, seven doubles and a triple through 193 plate appearances. Celestino is likely to be limited to a short-side platoon role, though he could draw in on occasion when Byron Buxton receives a maintenance day.... See More ... See Less -
Twins' Gilberto Celestino: Activated from paternity list
The Twins reinstated Celestino (personal) from the paternity list Thursday. Celestino was away from the team since Monday following the birth of his child, but he'll rejoin the Twins ahead of the four-game series against the Blue Jays over the weekend. Twins' Gilberto Celestino: Heads to paternity list
Minnesota placed Celestino on the paternity list Monday, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports. The Twins will swap one position player off the paternity list for another, as Gio Urshela (personal) rejoins the club for Monday's series opener with the Tigers while Celestino will now be away from the team for between 1-to-3 days. Twins' Gilberto Celestino: Retreats to bench
Celestino is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the White Sox. With Byron Buxton served as Minnesota's designated hitter in Tuesday's 8-2 win, Celestino picked up his sixth start in the outfield in nine games and finished 1-for-4 with a double. Celestino is back on the bench for the series finale, and he'll likely remain out of the lineup more often than not moving forward now that Minnesota has most of its key position players back to full health.... Twins' Gilberto Celestino: On bench for second straight
Celestino is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks. Celestino is on the bench for a second straight contest, which was preceded by a stretch of six consecutive starts.
