Cristian Mena opened the 2025 season in Triple-A but made the most of his three big-league appearances, allowing only one run on three hits and three walks while striking out six across 6.2 innings, earning a win and a hold in the process. Those kinds of outings had him on the inside track to earning a permanent spot on the Diamondbacks' major-league roster, but those aspirations vanished after he suffered a teres major strain in his right shoulder. He landed on the 60-day IL in mid-June and has yet to be cleared to throw, which puts his availability for spring training and the start of the 2026 season in jeopardy. Mena's control when healthy is a concern, but it's hard to ignore his K-BB rate (18.8 percent) in the minors and his whiff rate (30.4 percent) in the majors in 2025, albeit with a small sample size for the latter. Depending on how his recovery goes, Mena could sneak his way back onto the major-league roster in 2026, giving him fantasy value for strikeouts for those who have the space to hold onto him while on a potential rehab assignment.

Mena didn't pitch after June 6 last season after straining his right shoulder and had received a clean bill of health heading into spring training before aggravating the injury early in camp. The right-hander remains shut down from throwing and will now be shelved for at least the first two months of the season while he continues to rehab the injury.

Mena got off to a brutal start, allowing the first two batters to reach before surrendering back-to-back home runs in the opening frame. The right-hander then hurled two scoreless frames before being relieved by Bryce Jarvis to open the fourth, though the former also issued two walks over that final stretch, in addition to being charged with a balk. It was an uninspiring debut for the 21-year-old Mena, though perhaps Arizona will take it with a grain of salt considering the lineup he was up against in his first major-league start.
