  • Mariners' Emerson Hancock: Control issues in spot start

Hancock did not factor into the decision in Saturday's extra-inning win over the Athletics, allowing three earned runs on five hits and four walks over 5.1 innings. He struck out three. Hancock tossed only 56 of 93 pitches for strikes and generated a modest eight whiffs. He allowed a solo home run to Tyler Soderstrom to lead off the sixth inning before exiting a batter later, making it his longest outing at the big-league level since June 13. The right-hander shuttled between Seattle and Triple-A Tacoma this season, and he finished with a 4-4 mark, 4.75 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 39:19 K:BB across 60.2 big-league innings over 12 starts. Hancock posted better overall numbers in 16 starts with the Rainiers (6-3, 3.26 ERA, 1.27 WHIP), and he could get a chance to try and crack the major-league rotation again in spring training, although the M's aren't lacking for pitching depth.

  • Mariners' Emerson Hancock: Recalled from Tacoma

The Mariners recalled Hancock from Triple-A Tacoma on Saturday. Hancock has been recalled ahead of his start Saturday against the Athletics. He made his last start with the Mariners on Sept. 21 against the Rangers, when he allowed two runs on five hits while striking out three across five innings. Across 11 major-league outings this season, Hancock has a 4-4 record with a 4.72 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 36:15 K:BB across 55.1 innings.

  • Mariners' Emerson Hancock: Sent to Triple-A

The Mariners optioned Hancock to Triple-A Tacoma on Sunday, Shannon Drayer of SeattleSports.com reports. The move implies Luis Castillo (hamstring) will be able to return from the 15-day injured list to make a start this coming week. Hancock has been a serviceable sixth starter for the Mariners this season, posting a 4.72 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in 11 starts (55.1 innings).

  • Mariners' Emerson Hancock: Earns fourth win

Hancock (4-4) earned the win against the Rangers on Saturday, allowing two runs on five hits and no walks with three strikeouts over five innings. Hancock surrendered a two-run homer to Josh Smith in the third inning but worked four scoreless frames and generated 10 whiffs on 79 pitches. The 25-year-old pitched well considering this was his second consecutive start against Texas, and he now owns a 4.72 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 36:15 K:BB across 55.1 major-league innings this season. He could finish the regular season in the rotation against the Athletics next weekend, though that hinges on the status of Luis Castillo (hamstring).

  • Mariners' Emerson Hancock: Drawing another start

Hancock is slated to start Saturday's game against the Rangers at Globe Life Field. He'll pick up a second turn through the rotation in place of Luis Castillo (hamstring), who was placed on the injured list Sept. 10. Hancock has made 10 starts for Seattle this season, pitching to a 3-4 record, 4.83 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 33:15 K:BB over 50.1 innings.

  • Mariners' Emerson Hancock: Yields three runs in no-decision

Hancock allowed three earned runs on six hits and a walk while striking out five over five innings in a no-decision Friday in the Mariners' 5-4 win over the Rangers. Hancock threw 60 of 90 pitches for strikes in the start, though the Mariners offense didn't wake up until after he exited the game. Hancock has given up three or more earned runs in four of his 10 major-league appearances this season and nows owns a 4.83 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 33:15 K:BB over 50.1 innings. With Luis Castillo (hamstring) on the injured list, Hancock could end up finishing the season in the majors as a member of the rotation. He's projected to make his next start at home versus the Yankees.

  • Mariners' Emerson Hancock: Optioned after spot start

The Mariners optioned Hancock to Triple-A Tacoma on Monday. Hancock was called up from Tacoma to make a spot start in Saturday's loss to the Blue Jays, giving up two runs on six hits and one walk over four innings. With Bryan Woo (hamstring) set to return from the 15-day injured list week, Hancock is headed back to Tacoma to rejoin its rotation.

  • Mariners' Emerson Hancock: Recalled ahead of start

The Mariners recalled Hancock from Triple-A Tacoma to start Saturday's game against Toronto. Hancock last pitched for the Mariners on June 13, and he has since thrown 9.1 scoreless innings over two starts in Triple-A. He'll be called upon to get the M's through Saturday's contest, though his time in Seattle's rotation may only last one start with Bryan Woo (hamstring) nearing a return from the IL. Seby Zavala was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.

  • Mariners' Emerson Hancock: Goes seven frames in spot start

Hancock allowed two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out one batter over seven innings in a no-decision against the White Sox on Thursday. Hancock was called up from the minors Thursday morning so that he could make his first MLB start in over a month. The right-hander rose to the challenge, tossing seven innings for the first time this season and limiting Chicago to a pair of third-inning runs. As usual, strikeouts weren't a big part of his outing -- he has just 24 punchouts across 41.1 big-league innings this season -- but he nonetheless picked up his fourth quality start. Hancock could remain in the rotation if Bryan Woo (forearm) is forced to miss additional time, but that may not happen given that Woo's MRI on Wednesday came back clean.

  • Mariners' Emerson Hancock: Added to roster for spot start

The Mariners recalled Hancock from Triple-A Tacoma on Thursday. Hancock will start Thursday against the White Sox, giving the other members of Seattle's rotation some extra rest amidst a stretch of one team day off over the next 14 days. The right-hander has already logged seven starts at the big-league level this season -- the most recent on May 7 -- but has pitched to a 5.24 ERA and 1.31 WHIP while forging a 3-3 record. He's been much more effective at Tacoma, where he's sitting on a 2.17 ERA and 1.07 WHIP over the 29 innings covering his five starts with the Rainiers.

  • Mariners' Emerson Hancock: Headed back to minors

Hancock will be optioned to Triple-A Tacoma when Bryan Woo (elbow) rejoins the Mariners' rotation, Ryan Divish reports. Hancock started Tuesday's game against the Twins, so his option could become official later Wednesday with Woo poised to return Friday. The right-hander has put up a 5.24 ERA and 23:11 K:BB over 34.1 innings covering seven starts for the Mariners this season. Hancock will join Tacoma's rotation and would figure to be the guy Seattle calls upon when it needs another starter.

  • Mariners' Emerson Hancock: Dragged down by blow-up inning

Hancock didn't factor into the decision Tuesday against Minnesota, allowing four runs on four hits and two walks with no strikeouts over four innings. Hancock failed to tally a single strikeout Tuesday -- generating just five swinging strikes -- and he yielded all four hits and four runs in the third frame. Hancock couldn't get out of the inning despite retiring the first two batters he faced, allowing a single, walk, RBI single and three-run home run to consecutive batters. Considering Bryan Woo (elbow) just threw five innings in a rehab start and is eligible to come off the injured list Friday, Hancock may be sent to the bullpen or the minors instead of sticking around in the rotation for another start. In seven starts this year, Hancock owns a 5.24 ERA and a 23:11 K:BB over 34.1 innings.

  • Mariners' Emerson Hancock: Shaky in Wednesday's loss

Hancock (3-3) took the loss Wednesday, coughing up five runs (one earned) on five hits and four walks over 3.2 innings as the Mariners fell 5-2 to Atlanta. He struck out four. The right-hander's own throwing error in the third inning led to the game's first run, while a Mitch Haniger misplay in the fourth set the stage for a four-run outburst by Atlanta. Hancock tossed 47 of 77 pitches for strikes before exiting as he failed to complete four innings for the second time in six starts. The 24-year-old has had his moments in the Seattle rotation, but he could be headed to the bullpen or the minors soon with Bryan Woo (elbow) closing in on his return. Hancock should get at least one more turn while Woo finishes getting stretched out and will take a 4.75 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 23:9 K:BB through 30.1 innings into his next outing, which could come early next week in Minnesota.

  • Mariners' Emerson Hancock: Notches another quality start

Hancock (2-2) earned the win after he tossed six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk while striking out four batters in Seattle's 10-2 victory in Game 2 of Sunday's doubleheader with Colorado. Hancock had his start pushed back a couple days due to Friday's weather postponement and he impressed with the added rest. The right-hander limited the Rockies to just five baserunners while the only blemish on his line came in the bottom of the first inning when Elias Diaz ripped a two-RBI double. Hancock has produced back-to-back quality starts and he now owns a 6.10 ERA and 1.26 WHIP with 15 punchouts over 20.2 innings in four outings this season. The 24-year-old is tentatively set to return to the mound Friday at home versus the Diamondbacks.

  • Mariners' Emerson Hancock: Knocked around for eight runs

Hancock (1-1) took a bad loss Sunday against the Brewers, allowing eight runs on 11 hits and a walk while striking out six over 3.1 innings. One positive to note for Hancock was that his six strikeouts doubled his previous career-best, as he has just a 14 percent strikeout rate over five starts. Sunday was also easily the roughest outing of his career. Eight of the 14 balls put in play against him were hard hit, which included two home runs. The 25-year-old will stay in the rotation for now and lines up for a home start against the Cubs in the upcoming week.

  • Mariners' Emerson Hancock: Recalled from Triple-A

The Mariners recalled Hancock from Triple-A Tacoma on Thursday. The 24-year-old had been sent down last week, but he will enter the Seattle rotation as a replacement for the injured Bryan Woo (elbow). Hancock's first start of the season is slated to come Monday against the Guardians.

  • Mariners' Emerson Hancock: No structural damage in shoulder

Hancock, who isn't expected to pitch again this season due to a shoulder injury, has been diagnosed with a Grade 1-plus shoulder strain with no tear or structural damage, the team's official site reports. Hancock received a PRP injection in his shoulder Tuesday in an effort to speed up the healing process. The promising right-hander's recovery period is estimated to be 4-to-6 weeks from Aug. 20, the date he suffered the injury. At minimum, Hancock should be able to regain full health fairly early in the offseason, teeing up what will be a key spring training for him in 2024 as he gears up to potentially become a permanent fixture in the big-league rotation.

  • Mariners' Emerson Hancock: Transferred to 60-day IL

Hancock (shoulder) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Tuesday. Hancock was placed on the 15-day injured list after he left Sunday's game with a right shoulder strain. Now on the 60-day IL, the 24-year-old cannot return for the rest of the regular season. Bryan Woo (forearm) was activated from the injured list Tuesday as well, and the Mariners also signed veteran Luke Weaver as additional pitching reinforcement.

  • Mariners' Emerson Hancock: Possible waiver wire pickups

You can't complain about a big-league debut in which a pitcher allows just two hits, even if he ends up with just as many walks as strikeouts (three). Nerves most certainly played a part, and Hancock did well to limit the Padres to an 83.6 mph average exit velocity while putting the ball on the ground 64.3 percent of the time. Strikeouts probably aren't going to be his game anyway seeing as he had about one per inning over his minor-league career, though his 13 percent swinging-strike rate at Double-A this year was pretty solid. He doesn't throw especially hard and doesn't have a wipeout pitch, but he could be a workhorse stabilizer type who still has a role in Fantasy. If he delivers in his two starts this week, the first being against the Royals, you might not get another chance at him.

  • Mariners' Emerson Hancock: Called up for MLB debut

The Mariners selected Hancock's contract from Double-A Arkansas ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday versus the Padres at T-Mobile Park. The 24-year-old righty will be making his MLB debut Wednesday, stepping into the Seattle rotation as a replacement for Bryan Woo (forearm), who was placed on the 15-day injured list Tuesday. In order to clear room on the 40-man roster for Hancock, the Mariners designated left-hander Zach Muckenhirn for assignment. Hancock posted a strong 16.8 K-BB% in 21 starts at Arkansas this season and excelled at keeping the ball in the yard (0.83 HR/9), attributes that could allow him to find some success in his first taste of the majors. He may be worthy of a pickup on speculation, but managers in shallower leagues may want to observe Hancock's MLB debut from afar rather than including him in active lineups Wednesday.
