  • Rangers' Ricardo Rodriguez: Expected to miss start of season

Rodriguez (shoulder) will not be ready for the start of the 2019 season.

Rodriguez -- who recently signed a minor-league contract with the Rangers -- underwent shoulder surgery back in December, and his recovery is expected to carry into the 2019 campaign. The right-hander will likely report to Triple-A once healthy, though he could work his way to the majors if he holds his own at the highest level of the minors. Across parts of two big-league seasons, Rodriguez owns a 5.49 ERA and 14:5 K:BB in 19.2 innings of relief.

  • Rangers' Ricardo Rodriguez: Back with Texas

Rodriguez came to terms Tuesday with the Rangers on a minor-league contract, Gerry Fraley of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Dropped from the 40-man roster in November after the Rangers declined to tender him a contract for 2019, Rodriguez wasn't able to procure an MLB deal from the league's other 29 teams and ultimately opted to return to Texas for another season. His new contract likely includes an invitation to major-league spring training, where he'll have the opportunity to compete for a bullpen gig. The hard-throwing right-hander has posted some intriguing numbers in the high minors but was less impressive across 20 big-league appearances between 2017 and 2018, compiling a 5.49 ERA and 14:5 K:BB in 19.2 innings.

  • Ricardo Rodriguez: Cut loose

Rodriguez was non-tendered by the Rangers on Friday.

Rodriguez spent just four games in the major leagues during the 2018 season, allowing three runs while punching out three over 6.2 frames as a reliever.

  • Rangers' Ricardo Rodriguez: Returns to Triple-A

Rodriguez was optioned to Triple-A Round Rock on Saturday, T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com reports.

Rodriguez joined the Rangers in early July and allowed three runs on 11 hits over 6.2 innings during his brief stint with the team. The 25-year-old returns to Round Rock, where he has a 1.93 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in 17 games this season.

  • Rangers' Ricardo Rodriguez: Makes 2018 debut

Rodriguez allowed a hit to the first batter he faced before retiring the final five hitters Thursday, recording 1.2 scoreless innings in a 7-5 win over the Tigers. He struck out two and walked none.

Rodriguez was called up earlier in the day when the Rangers placed Chris Martin (groin) on the disabled list. Rodriguez was effective while in the minors, posting a 2.08 ERA in stops at Double-A Frisco and Triple-A Round Rock. His previous stint in the majors, however, was not as successful. The right-hander was rocked for a 6.23 ERA in 16 games with the Rangers last season.

  • Rangers' Ricardo Rodriguez: Called up from Round Rock

Rodriguez was recalled by the Rangers on Thursday.

Rodriguez has posted an impressive 1.93 ERA and 0.99 WHIP with a 17:3 K:BB across 18.2 innings with Triple-A Round Rock after missing the first two months of the season with elbow inflammation. He hasn't appeared in any games for the Rangers in 2018, but that will likely change once he joins the club in Detroit.

  • Rangers' Ricardo Rodriguez: Optioned to minors

Rodriguez was sent back down to Triple-A Round Rock on Thursday.

Rodriguez will head back to Round Rock after joining the Rangers on Monday. The right-hander failed to make an appearance during this brief stay in the majors, though he will likely find his way back to the big leagues later on this summer. Look for a corresponding move prior to Friday's game, which will presumably be the activation of Chris Martin (knee) from the 10-day DL.

  • Rangers' Ricardo Rodriguez: Promoted to majors

Rodriguez was recalled from Triple-A Round Rock on Monday .

Rodriguez will be making his season debut after posting a 6.23 ERA in 13 innings with the Rangers last season. Jose Trevino was optioned to Double-A Frisco in a corresponding move.

  • Rangers' Ricardo Rodriguez: Optioned to Triple-A

Rodriguez (elbow) has been reinstated from the disabled list and will head to Triple-A Round Rock on Tuesday, John Blake of the Texas Rangers reports.

Rodriguez will come off the disabled list after being shifted to the 60-day DL on April 2 due to elbow inflammation. As expected, he'll be sent to Triple-A. Rodriguez hasn't allowed a run and has struck out six batters across eight innings at Round Rock this season.

  • Rangers' Ricardo Rodriguez: Rehab assignment up

Rodriguez (biceps) is unlikely to be activated to the majors when his rehabilitation assignment expires Tuesday, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports.

Rodriguez is expected to land with Triple-A Round Rock, but the Rangers need to clear room on the 40-man roster first. In 11 innings of rehab work, Rodriguez allowed one run, a home run to the first batter he faced, in his first outing before throwing 10 consecutive scoreless innings.

  • Rangers' Ricardo Rodriguez: Moves to Triple-A

Rodriguez (elbow) will continue his rehab assignment with Triple-A Round Rock, Levi Weaver of The Athletic reports.

Rodriguez appeared in three games for Double-A Frisco in May, allowing one earned run with a 0.67 WHIP, but more importantly, he did not report any pain in his elbow. If all goes well with Round Rock, Rodriguez should be reinstated from the 60-day DL around the end of this month.

  • Rangers' Ricardo Rodriguez: Headed to Frisco

Rodriguez (elbow) will begin a rehabilitation assignment at Double-A Frisco on Tuesday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Rodriguez has been dealing with inflammation in his elbow since spring training, which eventually landed him on the 60-day disabled list. The Rangers' bullpen ranks sixth in innings pitched (107.0) and 20th in ERA (4.46), so there could be a need for Rodriguez, who got a taste of the majors last season, when he's ready to come of the DL. He's not eligible to be activated until later in May.

  • Rangers' Ricardo Rodriguez: Resumes mound work

Rodriguez (elbow) has resumed throwing off a mound at the Rangers' extended spring training facility, T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com reports.

The Rangers believe Rodriguez will be ready to begin a minor-league rehab assignment in early May, putting him on track to be activated from the 60-day disabled list when he's first eligible in late May. The right-hander is among the harder throwers in the Rangers' system, but the inconsistency he displayed in the second half of last season may result in Texas optioning him to Triple-A Round Rock upon his activation.

  • Rangers' Ricardo Rodriguez: Moved to 60-day disabled list

Rodriguez (elbow) was moved to the 60-day disabled list in order to make room for Bartolo Colon on Monday.

Rodriguez has been dealing with elbow inflammation since mid-March and opened the season on the 10-day disabled list. There hadn't been any indication that the issue was particularly serious, but now he'll be ineligible to return until late May. The 25-year-old will push for a bullpen spot once he returns from his injury.

  • Rangers' Ricardo Rodriguez: Officially placed on DL

Rodriguez (elbow) was put on the 10-day disabled list retroactive to March 26, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports.

Rodriguez will be eligible to return for the series finale against Oakland on April 5. The right-hander has been dealing with right elbow inflammation for the past few weeks and will need a little more time to recover. There's a chance that Rodriguez will head down to Triple-A Round Rock once he's healthy.

  • Rangers' Ricardo Rodriguez: Will open on DL with elbow issue

The Rangers anticipate that Rodriguez will open the season on the 10-day disabled list due to right elbow inflammation, T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com reports.

Rodriguez earned his way to the big leagues last August after racking up 61 strikeouts to go with a 1.34 ERA and 0.72 WHIP across 47 innings with High-A Down East and Double-A Midland. The right-hander predictably found life in the majors more difficult, but his big fastball was expected to keep him in contention for an Opening Day spot in a Rangers bullpen lacking in impact arms. However, with the elbow issue having prevented him from pitching since March 6 and more rest on the docket, Rodriguez may have to settle for a minor-league assignment once he's activated from the DL.

  • Rangers' Ricardo Rodriguez: Finishes out sixth inning

Rodriguez retired the lone batter he faced in a three-pitch at-bat in Sunday's 8-1 loss to the Athletics.

Rodriguez was able to strand a runner at second base with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, but with the Athletics holding a 7-0 lead at the time, it was far from a crucial situation. The young fireballer made a quick impact in his first taste of the big leagues by notching a save in his fifth MLB appearance, but since that time, he's looked the part of a 25-year-old who has spent much of the campaign at the Double-A level. He's been tagged for eight runs in six innings over his last nine outings, which has resulted in him falling out of the Rangers' setup ranks.

  • Rangers' Ricardo Rodriguez: Earns first career save

Rodriguez struck out one in a perfect ninth inning against the Angels on Thursday en route to his first career save.

He earned his first save in his fifth career appearance, and Rodriguez made it look easy, throwing nine of his 10 pitches for strikes. The 24-year-old was just filling in for regular closer Alex Claudio, who pitched two innings Wednesday, but his usage speaks to the strong impression he's made in his first couple weeks with the big club.

  • Rangers' Ricardo Rodriguez: Turns in scoreless frame

Rodriguez worked around a two-out walk to turn in a scoreless inning in Wednesday's 7-5 win over the Angels in 10 innings.

Rodriguez was only making his fourth appearance with the Rangers since his Aug. 8 promotion, but the fact that manager Jeff Banister was willing to use him in the seventh inning of a tie ball game illustrates how much traction the young right-hander is already gaining in key spots. In fairness, the Rangers don't have many appealing alternatives in the setup ranks with Keone Kela (shoulder) and Matt Bush (knee, concussion) on the disabled list and a couple other relievers (Jose Leclerc and Jason Grilli) showing limited reliability of late, but Rodriguez certainly has the skills to hold down a vital bullpen role for the long term. Rodriguez, who sports a mid-90s fastball as part of a three-pitch mix, has yielded one run over his four innings with the Rangers after submitting a 1.20 ERA and posting a 17:1 K:BB with Double-A Frisco prior to his callup.
