Liam Hicks was acquired by Detroit from the Rangers at the trade deadline in the deal that sent Carson Kelly to Texas and he was then snagged by the Marlins in this offseason's Rule 5 draft. Hicks projects to be a backup catcher long term, and he'll need to be kept in the majors all season otherwise Miami would have to return him to Detroit. Hicks' production at Double-A improved after the trade, as he slashed .272/.414/.368 with two home runs, two steals, a 15.9 percent walk rate and a 9.7 percent strikeout rate in 33 games after slashing .260/.364/.353 with four home runs in 80 games with the Rangers' Double-A affiliate. Hicks hasn't logged a slugging percentage higher than his on-base percentage since he was in rookie ball in 2022, so it's pretty clear that power won't be a big part of the equation but he could be one of Miami's better on-base threats. Hicks will be competing with Nick Fortes and prospect Agustin Ramirez for playing time behind the dish, and he could also get starts at first base and designated hitter if he's holding his own as a hitter.

  • Marlins' Liam Hicks: Set as No. 2 catcher

Hicks is expected to begin the season as the Marlins' backup catcher behind Nick Fortes, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. That's no real surprise, especially after top prospect Agustin Ramirez was optioned to Triple-A Jacksonville on Sunday. Hicks, a Rule 5 pick from the Tigers' system, has shown some good plate discipline with a 5:5 BB:K in 11 Grapefruit League appearances this spring, but he's batting just .227 (5-for-22) with a double as his only extra-base hit. The Marlins remain in a seemingly never-ending rebuild, so Hicks will likely get as much playing time as he shows he can handle until Ramirez pushes his way onto the big-league roster.

  • Marlins' Liam Hicks: Gets boost from Alcantara

Hicks caught Sandy Alcantara on Sunday, and the Marlins' ace came away impressed by his game-calling and pitch framing, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports. Hicks was selected in the Rule 5 draft from Detroit, giving Miami every incentive to keep him on the 26-man roster, but Hicks is showing early in camp he can make an immediate contribution as well. The 25-year-old backstop went 1-for-2 at the plate Sunday, but it's his work behind the plate that will likely keep him in the majors. Hicks has yet to play above Double-A, and he slashed .264/.379/.357 over 113 games at that level in 2024 split between the Tigers' and Rangers' organizations. If he does secure a spot on the Marlins' roster, he'll back up Nick Fortes to begin the season.
