Player Outlook
Jeremy Pena's 2024 and 2025 seasons look somewhat similar in the counting categories until you realize he nearly equaled or bested most of them in more than 100 fewer plate appearances. Pena was limited to 125 games due to a fractured rib and a left oblique strain later in the season. Pena was pacing to a career season at the plate across the board, but fantasy managers likely were most surprised by the nearly 40-point improvement in his batting average after witnessing him average .261 over the previous three seasons. Pena continues to be a high-contact hitter but accepted a few more walks when he was not crushing fastballs. Pena hit half his home runs off fastballs along with having a .350 average (.323 xBA) against fastballs, but that success came at the peril of him hitting .182 while swinging and missing at nearly 50 percent of the off-speed pitches he saw. A fully healthy Pena has 30-30 potential with his home park, his pull tendencies and road games in Sacramento on the schedule in 2026. He's a five-category producer who, so far, does not carry the price tag associated with such players.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Swipes bag in 2026 debut

Pena went 2-for-5 with a run scored and a stolen base in Friday's 6-2 loss to the Angels. After being held out Opening Day, Pena made his season debut hitting leadoff and set the table very effectively. The shortstop missed most of spring training, and a chance to play for the Dominican Republic during the WBC, as a result of a fractured fingertip he sustained in early March, but Pena recovered in time to avoid a stint on the IL and appears to be fully healthy.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: In lineup Friday

Pena (finger) is leading off and playing shortstop Friday against the Angels. Pena was held out on Opening Day, but he's back in action for game No. 2. His return to the lineup pushes Carlos Correa to third base, while Isaac Paredes moves to DH and Yordan Alvarez fills left field. Pena sustained a fractured finger March 4.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: All clear for Opening Day

The Astros announced Wednesday that Pena (finger) will be part of their Opening Day roster, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. Pena fractured his right ring finger in early March and was held out of game action until playing in an exhibition contest Tuesday. The 28-year-old slugged a home run in that game and appears ready to roll for Thursday's opener against the Angels. Pena is set to start at shortstop and bat leadoff for Houston this season.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Takes batting practice Monday

Pena (finger) took batting practice on the field at Daikin Park in Houston on Monday, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports. Pena traveling with the Astros to Houston rather than stay back in extended spring training is certainly a good sign as he attempts to avoid the injured list and be in the Opening Day lineup. The 28-year-old has not played in a game setting since fracturing his right ring finger in an exhibition contest nearly three weeks ago. If the Astros decide to give Pena more time to heal, they will use Carlos Correa at shortstop and Isaac Paredes at third base.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Swinging bat

Pena (finger) began swinging a bat Friday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. The Astros still haven't ruled Pena out for Opening Day, and his ability to hold/swing a bat without aggravating his fractured finger will likely be a key factor in determining his availability. If the team decides it's best to hold him out, Carlos Correa would presumably slide over to shortstop while Isaac Paredes mans the hot corner.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Resumes throwing, will swing soon

Astros manager Joe Espada said Wednesday that Pena (finger) has resumed throwing and will start swinging a bat with both hands this weekend, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. Pena has been out of action since fracturing the tip of his right ring finger while corralling a groundball for Team Dominican Republic in an exhibition game two weeks ago. The injury kept Pena from playing in the World Baseball Classic, but he was able to resume taking part in limited baseball activities last week and will take another step forward by throwing and swinging the bat. Espada said Wednesday that Pena "has not been ruled out" for Opening Day, but the shortstop's availability for the start of the season will depend on how his injured digit responds to the increased activity over the next few days. Carlos Correa would likely slide over from third base to cover shortstop if Pena needs to miss time to begin the season.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Injures finger, undergoing tests

Astros general manager Dana Brown told reporters Wednesday that Pena took a groundball to his fingertip and will undergo X-rays Thursday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. Per Dylan Delgatto of SportingNews, Pena suffered a small fracture in his finger during Wednesday's World Baseball Classic exhibition game against the Tigers, and the injury puts him in jeopardy of missing at least the first round of the WBC. Pena will undergo further tests to determine the severity of the injury and whether he is in danger of missing more time, potentially for the start of the MLB regular season. If he were to be sidelined for an extended period of time, then the Astros could turn to Nick Allen to take over at shortstop or move Carlos Correa from third base and have Isaac Paredes serve at the hot corner.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Shelved to end season

The Astros placed Pena (oblique) on the 10-day injured list Sunday. Pena had sat out the Astros' last six games due to a left oblique strain, and with Houston officially getting eliminated from playoff contention following Saturday's action, he won't be called on to play in Sunday's season finale. The Astros recalled outfielder Jacob Melton from Triple-A Sugar Land in a corresponding move, but the team hasn't suggested that Pena's oblique strain will affect his offseason plans. The shortstop put together his best campaign in the majors so far, besting his previous career high in OPS by 125 points.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: On bench Friday

Pena (oblique) is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Angels, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. Pena is working through a strained left oblique that has caused him pain while taking mild swings. It's unclear if the Astros are contemplating putting Pena on the injured list, but the shortstop has been out of the lineup for five consecutive games.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Sitting third straight

Pena (oblique) isn't in the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Athletics. Pena will sit on the bench for a third straight game since being taken out of Sunday's lineup with a sore left oblique. Carlos Correa will slide over to shortstop to cover for Pena, allowing Ramon Urias to pick up a start at third base.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Scratched from lineup

Pena was scratched from Sunday's lineup against the Mariners due to left oblique soreness, Shannon Drayer of SeattleSports.com reports. Pena was originally set to bat leadoff and play shortstop in Sunday's series finale, but he'll now head to the bench. Mauricio Dubon will replace him against Seattle, and more information on Pena's status will likely come in the near future.

Pena is out of the lineup for Friday's game against Atlanta. Pena will get the night off after making 24 consecutive starts at shortstop. Pena has produced six multi-hit performances over his past 12 games, batting .306 with two homers, eight RBI, six runs and three thefts over that span. He's up to an .848 OPS on the campaign, which is on pace to blow away his previous career-best mark of .715.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Doubles twice in win

Pena went 2-for-4 with two doubles, a walk, an RBI and a run scored Monday against the Angels. Three frames later, he drove in a run with another two-base hit. Pena has multiple hits in five of his last 10 starts, also tallying six RBI and five runs scored in that span.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Still out Saturday

Pena (illness) isn't in the starting lineup Saturday against Baltimore, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. Pena didn't start Friday due to an illness, and he's going to begin on the bench for at least an additional day. It's not clear if the star shortstop is available off the bench. Mauricio Dubon is getting another start at shortstop in Pena's stead.

  • Astros' Jeremy Pena: Under the weather Friday

Manager Joe Espada said Pena, who is out of the lineup for Friday's game against Baltimore, is feeling under the weather and is getting some tests done, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. It's more than just a night off for Pena, who looks to be battling some sort of sickness. He should be considered day-to-day until more information is presented. Mauricio Dubon is playing shortstop Friday.

The 27-year-old is batting .289 (13-for-45) with two doubles, a triple, two homers and two steals in 11 games since being reinstated from the injured list.
