Player Outlook
The Red Sox snagged Braden Montgomery with the 12th overall pick last year but he didn't debut due to a broken right ankle suffered on a play at the plate in June. He was dealt to Chicago this offseason as the second piece in a four-prospect package that sent Garrett Crochet to Boston. Montgomery was a two-way player in 2022 and 2023 with Stanford, but he largely scrapped pitching to focus on developing as a right fielder after transferring to Texas A&M for his junior season. The 6-foot-2 switch hitter has monster power to all fields and a double-plus arm in the field, so he possesses a classic right fielder profile. He slashed .322/.454/.733 with 27 home runs in his lone season in the SEC. His strikeout rates have been higher than those of most of the other top college bats in the class, but he turned in an OPS over .830 with a wood bat in the Cape Cod League in 2022 and 2023, so his track record of producing in two college conferences and the top summer circuit are big marks in his favor. Montgomery attempted only eight steals in 75 games across his junior season and final year on the Cape, and he grades as an average runner, so home runs, RBI, runs and on-base percentage are the top categories he could be a big positive in.

  • White Sox's Braden Montgomery: Looks healthy for spring

Montgomery (ankle) has appeared in three Cactus League games thus far, going 1-for-3 with a walk while playing seven innings in center field and four in left field. The No. 12 overall selection by the Red Sox in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft, Montgomery didn't make his professional debut at any point last summer, as he was recovering from surgery to address a fractured ankle that he suffered in June while playing with Texas A&M. The Red Sox then shipped him to Chicago over the winter as part of the prospect haul the White Sox received in exchange for left-hander Garrett Crochet. Now with a new organization, Montgomery seems to be healthy again, and the White Sox's decision to give him at-bats in spring training suggests that he'll bypass rookie ball and report to a full-season affiliate at the conclusion of spring training.

  • White Sox's Braden Montgomery: Going to ChiSox in Crochet trade

The Red Sox traded Montgomery (ankle) to the White Sox on Wednesday along with Kyle Teel, Chase Meidroth and Wikelman Gonzalez in exchange for Garrett Crochet, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. Montgomery was the No. 12 overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft and has yet to make his professional debut after fracturing his ankle in his final college season at Texas A&M. The switch-hitting outfielder should be healthy for the start of the 2025 campaign and is a big addition to the Chicago farm system.
