The Rockies reinstated Rolison (shoulder) from the 60-day injured list and optioned him to Triple-A Albuquerque on Monday.
Though Rolison still had time left in his 30-day rehab window, the southpaw didn't have a spot in the big-league rotation waiting for him, so the Rockies opted to activate him early. He'll now continue to make regular starts out of the Albuquerque rotation and work to hone his command and control after missing the entire 2022 season while recovering from surgery to repair the labrum of his left shoulder. Over his first three rehab outings between Albuquerque and Single-A Fresno, Rolison allowed nine runs on 12 hits and six walks while striking out nine in 10 innings.

Rolison missed the entire 2022 season and eventually underwent surgery last June to repair the labrum in his left shoulder, but he looks to be just a few weeks away from returning from the 60-day injured list. Heading into the season, the Rockies may have initially been planning to option Rolison to Triple-A Albuquerque at the conclusion of his 30-day rehab window, but long-term elbow injuries to German Marquez and Antonio Senzatela have already tested the organization's thin pitching depth. If Rolison continues to fare reasonably well when he eventually moves his rehab assignment to higher-level affiliate, he could have a spot in the big-league rotation waiting for him once he's activated.

The 25-year-old Rolison didn't pitch in 2022 after ultimately undergoing season-ending left shoulder surgery in mid-June, but he appears to be progressing as anticipated in his rehab and recovery program and looks set to head into spring training with few restrictions, if any. His surgery was overseen by renowned orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache and apparently went according to plan. Rolison confirmed he'll miss the rest of the 2022 season but noted in his post that he expects to be ready to go for the start of the 2023 campaign.

One of the organization's top pitching prospects, Rolison looks like he could be under consideration to make his MLB debut during the final week of the regular season. As Groke notes, Rolison threw a side session at Coors Field on Sunday, which would put him on normal rest for a spot start Friday, when the Rockies kick off their series in Arizona with a doubleheader. The Rockies have no other obvious candidate to serve as the sixth man in their rotation this week, so Rolison could get the chance to showcase his skills with the hope of breaking camp with the big club in 2021. The 23-year-old split time between the California and South Atlantic Leagues in 2019, posting a 4.40 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 132 strikeouts in 131 innings.
