Player Outlook
Tarik Skubal underwent left flexor tendon surgery in August of 2022 and his rehab extended through the first three months of last season. He was on a limited pitch count initially upon his return and there were some bumps in the road early, but Skubal eventually rounded into form, going 4-1 with a 1.25 ERA, 0.67 WHIP and 52:6 K:BB in his final six starts (36 innings). A ninth-round pick in 2018, Skubal changed up his formula last season, dialing back his slider usage significantly for more four-seam fastballs and changeups. The changeup proved to be a big swing-and-miss pitch for him (50.6 Whiff% per Statcast) -- he still threw his slider, but the changeup became his primary secondary pitch behind the four-seamer. In total, the southpaw pitched just 95 innings last season, but if healthy, he should approach his career high of 149.1 innings set in 2021. Entering his age-27 season, Skubal will face an uphill battle every time he takes the ball for Detroit, but his skills are enticing.

  • Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Strikes out six in win

Skubal (11-3) earned the win against the Guardians on Monday, allowing one run on 10 hits and one walk with six strikeouts over seven innings. Skubal yielded a run on a bases-loaded bunt in the second inning before tossing five straight scoreless frames. Despite allowing a season-high 10 hits, he generated 15 swinging strikes and logged his fifth consecutive quality start. The southpaw now leads the AL with a 2.34 ERA to go along with a 0.92 WHIP and 146:22 K:BB across 123 innings. He projects for a home matchup with the Twins this weekend.

  • Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Strikes out eight in no-decision

Skubal did not factor into the decision in Friday's 4-3 loss to the Dodgers, allowing two runs on two hits and one walk with eight strikeouts over six innings. Skubal surrendered two runs in the fourth inning but was otherwise dominant, tossing four perfect frames and departing with a 3-2 lead. He generated 14 swinging strikes, including seven on his signature changeup, and has now logged four consecutive quality starts. The first-time All-Star leads all starting pitchers with a 0.88 WHIP while also owning a 2.41 ERA and 140:21 K:BB through 116 innings this season.

  • Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Dazzles for 10th win

Skubal (10-3) allowed one run on three hits over seven innings to earn the win Sunday against the Reds. He struck out 13. Skubal was dominant once again Sunday as he recorded a new season high in strikeouts and allowed one run or fewer for the 10th time in 18 starts. The lefty now has a stellar 2.37 ERA and 132 strikeouts across 110 innings this year, which earned him his first All-Star selection Sunday as well. Skubal has been an excellent fantasy asset, and he's set up to make one more start before the All-Star break, likely on Friday against the Dodgers. It's a tough matchup, but the Detroit ace should remain locked into lineups the rest of the way.

  • Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Fans seven in quality start

Skubal came away with a no-decision Tuesday, giving up three runs on four hits and a walk over six innings as the Tigers fell 5-3 to the Twins. He struck out seven. While he mostly kept traffic off the bases, a two-run double by Royce Lewis (groin) in the third inning and a solo shot by Manuel Margot in the fifth helped deny Skubal his 10th win of the year. The southpaw did collect his 12th quality start of the season, and he'll take a 2.45 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 119:20 K:BB through 103 innings into his next outing, which lines up to come on the road this weekend in Cincinnati.

  • Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Dominates for ninth win

Skubal (9-3) tossed seven scoreless innings to earn the win Tuesday against the Phillies. He allowed three hits and a walk while striking out seven. Skubal came into Tuesday in a bit of a slump, as he had allowed nine runs (eight earned) across 10.1 total innings in his previous two starts, which were both losses. The lefty got back on track in a big way, however, with a dominant performance against a tough Philadelphia lineup. It was the sixth time this season that Skubal didn't allow any runs in an outing, which is a big reason why he's sitting with a 2.32 ERA, good for fourth in the majors. Detroit's ace is having an outstanding year, and he'll look to keep rolling in his next scheduled appearance, which is tentatively set for next Tuesday against the Twins.

  • Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Takes second straight loss

Skubal (8-3) took the loss Wednesday against Atlanta, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits and two walks over four innings. He struck out seven. Most of the damage against Skubal came via the long ball Wednesday -- he gave up a two-run homer to Sean Murphy in the third inning before Ramon Laureano tacked on a solo shot in the fourth. The 27-year-old Skubal has now lost back-to-back starts for the first time this season -- he's given up eight earned runs over 10.1 innings in that span. The left-hander still sports a solid 2.50 ERA on the year with a 0.97 WHIP and 105:18 K:BB across 90 innings. Skubal is lined up for another tough matchup next week at home versus the Phillies.

Skubal dominated the Brewers, inducing 17 swinging strikes and allowing only one extra-base hit, turning in his ninth quality start over his past 10 games. The southpaw has been one of the best pitchers in baseball, compiling a 1.92 ERA and a 0.89 WHIP with 96 strikeouts in 79.2 innings. He is tentatively scheduled for a road start in Houston next weekend.

  • Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Strikes out six in no-decision

Skubal did not factor into the decision in Monday's 2-1 win over the Rangers, allowing one run on seven hits and two walks with six strikeouts over six innings. Skubal surrendered a leadoff home run to Marcus Semien in the first inning but held the Rangers in check over the next five and left the mound in a 1-1 tie. Skubal allowed at least one baserunner in each inning, but he was still able to earn a quality start despite not having his best stuff. Through 12 starts, Skubal, who has not walked more than two batters in any game this season, has posted a sparkling 1.97 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 86:13 K:BB and tentatively lines up for a home matchup against the Brewers on Sunday.

Skubal (7-1) picked up the win in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader split with the Pirates, scattering three hits and a walk over seven scoreless innings. He struck out eight. The southpaw was dominant once again, as he retired the last 10 batters he faced and didn't allow a Pittsburgh baserunner to get past second base. Skubal generated a whopping 36 called or swinging strikes among his 93 pitches as he produced his eighth quality start of the season, and he'll take a dazzling 2.01 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 80:11 K:BB through 67 innings into his next outing, which lines up to come on the road early next week against the Rangers.

  • Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Comes up short in first loss

Skubal (6-1) took the loss Wednesday as the Tigers were downed 8-3 by the Royals, giving up four runs on six hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out six. In a matchup of elite southpaws, Skubal wasn't able to keep pace with Cole Ragans and failed to complete six innings for only the second time this season in 10 starts, while tying his season high in runs allowed. Skubal also served up a solo shot to Nelson Velazquez in the fourth inning, just the fourth homer off him in 60 innings. Skubal will take a 2.25 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 72:10 K:BB into his next outing, which lines up to come at home next week against the Pirates.

  • Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Six shutout innings for sixth win

Skubal (6-0) allowed just one hit and struck out six over six shutout innings to earn the win Friday over the Diamondbacks. The Tigers' offense was explosive Friday, but Skubal was excellent in his own right in his best outing of the campaign. This was his sixth straight quality start, as well as the fourth time he's avoided walking a batter this season. The southpaw is now at a 1.80 ERA, 0.78 WHIP and 66:8 K:BB through 55 innings over nine starts. He's projected to make his next start at Kansas City.

  • Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Strikes out six in no-decision

Skubal allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits across 6.1 innings and did not factor into the decision Wednesday against the Rangers. He walked one and struck out six. Skubal has now given up two earned runs or fewer in three of his four starts this season, resulting in a stellar 2.28 ERA. The lefty also has 26 strikeouts across 23.2 innings, and his overall body of work makes him a very strong fantasy asset moving forward. Skubal is projected to take the mound again Monday against the Rays, and he should be locked into lineups no matter the opponent, as he appears to be fairly matchup-proof at this point.

Skubal (2-0) earned the win Friday against Minnesota, striking out five batters over five scoreless frames while giving up two hits and two walks. • Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Stumbles late against A's

Skubal didn't factor into the decision Friday against Oakland, allowing four runs on four hits and two walks over 6.1 innings. He struck out nine. Skubal was dominant through the first five innings Friday, holding the A's scoreless while racking up seven strikeouts. However, the left-hander would allow a two-run homer to Brent Rooker in the sixth before Oakland tacked on two more runs in the seventh, costing Skubal his second win of the season. While fatigue may have been a factor, he still generated an impressive 16 whiffs overall. After blanking the White Sox on Opening Day, Skubal sports a 2.92 ERA with 15 strikeouts and just two walks through his first 12.1 innings this year.

  • Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Dazzles in Opening Day win

Skubal (1-0) tossed six scoreless innings to earn the win Thursday against the White Sox. He allowed three hits, struck out six and didn't walk a batter. Skubal left after tossing 83 pitches, and if it wasn't his first start of the season, he may have been allowed to go longer as he was dominant while in the contest. The southpaw compiled a 2.80 ERA and 0.90 WHIP across 15 outings last year, which got off to a delayed start due to left flexor tendon surgery in August of 2022. If Skubal can stay healthy and log a full workload in 2024, he could be in line for a true breakout campaign as Detroit's ace.
