  • Mariners' Kade Anderson: Just misses quality start in MLB debut

Anderson took a no-decision against the Cubs on Saturday, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks in 5.2 innings. He struck out five.

Making his highly anticipated major-league debut, the 22-year-old southpaw fired four shutout innings to begin Saturday's outing before faltering a bit. The Cubs tagged Anderson for a pair of solo home runs in the sixth inning to spoil what was an outstanding opening act up until that point, but the rookie hurler still showed plenty of promise overall. Anderson, widely regarded as the top pitching prospect in baseball, is tentatively slated to make his second big-league appearance next weekend in Toronto.

  • Mariners' Kade Anderson: Promoted ahead of start

The Mariners selected Anderson's contract from Double-A Arkansas ahead of his start Saturday against the Cubs.

After turning in a 1.06 ERA and 0.64 WHIP while striking out 135 batters in 93.1 innings at Double-A, Anderson will skip past Triple-A and make his MLB debut Saturday. The 22-year-old lefty is viewed by many as the top pitching prospect in the sport and is likely to remain in the Mariners' rotation through the end of the season, assuming he doesn't struggle mightily during his first few major-league outings. Jhonathan Diaz was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.

  • Mariners' Kade Anderson: Making debut Saturday

The Mariners are expected to select Anderson's contract from Double-A Arkansas to start Saturday's game against the Cubs, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.

Widely viewed as one of the top pitching prospects in all of baseball, Anderson has been incredible at Double-A this season, pitching to a ludicrous 1.06 ERA and 0.64 WHIP to go with a 135:13 K:BB across 93.1 innings. The 22-year-old's dominance will allow him to skip Triple-A entirely and head straight to the big leagues, further bolstering a Mariners rotation that's put up a 3.89 ERA this year. His first test in the big leagues will come against a Cubs offense that's logged a .772 OPS since the beginning of the month, but the young lefty is still worth rostering in virtually all fantasy formats.

  • Mariners' Kade Anderson: Will start when called up

President of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto said Tuesday that Anderson will serve as a starter for the Mariners once he's eventually called up from Double-A Arkansas later this season, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. "We're not going to put Kade in the bullpen," Dipoto said. "He's the best starting pitcher in the minor leagues."

Anderson has done his part to back up Dipoto's bold claim, as he's overwhelmed Texas League hitters to the tune of a 1.20 ERA, 0.66 WHIP and 119:12 K:BB in 82.1 innings through his first 16 starts in the pro ranks. Though Anderson moved up to sixth on the organizational starting pitching depth chart after Luis Castillo was traded to the White Sox over the weekend, the Mariners aren't yet ready to expand their five-man rotation to accommodate the 22-year-old lefty. Anderson is scheduled to meet with the Mariners' brass Wednesday to map out a plan for his call-up to Seattle in the coming weeks, but in the short term, he looks set to continue building innings at Double-A. The Mariners' commitment to eventually onboard Anderson as a starter down the stretch would at least enhance his fantasy utility, as his usage and opportunities to earn wins would be more predictable as a starter than if he were deployed as a multi-inning option out of the bullpen.
