Raiders' Johnathan Abram: Seeking Year 2 breakout
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Abram enters his second pro season locked in as the Raiders' starting strong safety, Scott Bair of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

The 27th overall pick in the 2019 draft suffered a season-ending rotator cuff tear Week 1 last year. A report in early February suggested he was 90 percent healthy and comfortably bench-pressing 185 pounds, so it's safe to assume Abram is back at full strength by this point. He should be locked in as a three-down player, while Damarious Randall, Erik Harris and Jeff Heath are all candidates to start at free safety. Abram looks like the best IDP choice of the group.

Raiders' Johnathan Abram: Close to full health

Abram is at 90 percent after tearing his rotator cuff in Oakland's 2019 season opener, Vic Tafur of The Athletic reports.

According to Tafur, Abram benched 185 pounds 10 times during his recent training sessions. "I cannot wait to get back out there on the field," stated Abram. Assuming his rehab goes as planned the rest of the way, the Mississippi State product is on track to begin the 2020 season as the team's starting free safety.

Raiders' Johnathan Abram: Season officially over
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Abram (shoulder) is not eligible to return from injured reserve in 2019 after the Raiders chose to activate Marquel Lee on Monday, Scott Bair of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

It's not clear if Abram is close to returning from a health-standpoint anyway, but that doesn't matter now. The 2019 first-rounder will instead focus on making a full return from his torn labrum and rotator cuff before the start of spring workouts in 2020.

Raiders' Johnathan Abram: Lands on IR
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Abram (shoulder) was placed on injured reserve Friday.

Abram underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum and rotator cuff in his shoulder. The rookie was selected 27th overall by the Raiders in this year's draft and was able to record five total tackles in their season opener against Denver. It's unclear whether Abram will be able to recover in time to return this season.

Raiders' Johnathan Abram: Heading for shoulder surgery
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Abram is expected to undergo surgery this week to address a torn labrum and rotator cuff in his shoulder and could miss the rest of the season, Adam Lefkoe of Bleacher Report reports.

Abram apparently sustained the injury during the first quarter of Monday's win over the Broncos, though he still played 49 of 64 defensive snaps and had five tackles. Per Josina Anderson of ESPN, the rookie first-round pick will seek a second opinion before potentially being placed on injured reserve.

Raiders' Johnathan Abram: Raiders select in first round
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

The Raiders selected Abram in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft, 27th overall.

The selection seems to herald the imminent exit of 2016 first-rounder Karl Joseph, as the Raiders otherwise signed Lamarcus Joyner at safety earlier this offseason. If the Raiders can't trade Joseph and then don't commit to cutting him then it might be tough for Abram to establish himself as a three-down player right off the bat, but that eventual outcome is clearly what Oakland has in mind. Whenever he does step into a full-time role Abram projects as a potential impact player, including as an IDP. He was a leading contributor on what was a ruthless Mississippi State defense the last two years, and his 4.45-second 40-yard dash provides some optimism for his coverage projection. He generally looks like more of a strong safety fit for Oakland given the Joyner signing, and between the two he should find more tackle opportunities, at least on a per-snap basis.
