Ales Hemsky: Announces retirement
Hemsky announced his retirement from the NHL on Friday, Sean Shapiro of The Athletic reports.
Hemsky, who was drafted by the Oilers with 13th overall pick of the 2001 draft, spent most of his career in Edmonton, racking up 142 goals and 477 points in 652 games over 11 seasons. The 2001 first-round pick will call it quits having amassed 174 goals and 398 assists in 845 games during a 15-year career which also included stops in Ottawa, Dallas and Montreal.

Hemsky hasn't played since Oct. 20 and appeared in just seven games this year. With no points to show for it, the winger's debut season with Montreal could also be his last, as the 34-year-old is set to be an unrestricted free agent July 1.

Despite reportedly being cleared for contact, Hemsky once again was held out of practice, which could be an indication he suffered a relapse in his recovery from a concussion. Hemsky (concussion) took contact during Friday's practice but won't play Saturday against the Lightning, Eric Engels of Sportsnet.ca reports.
Considering he hasn't played since Oct. 20, the Canadiens want to ensure Hemsky absorbs enough contact before returning to duty, so his next chance to dress will be Monday against the Flyers. Even before his injury, the 34-year-old forward didn't post a point over seven games, so the Habs likely aren't in a rush to return him, especially since they've basically been eliminated from the playoff picture.

Canadiens' Ales Hemsky: Unavailable for road trip
Hemsky (concussion) will stay back in Montreal when the team heads out on a four-game road trip.
Hemsky has been doing some light skating, but otherwise has yet to resume practicing, so it shouldn't come as a surprise to see he is not making the trip. The Habs return home Feb. 22 against the Rangers; however, since he won't be practicing with the team, his return will likely be after that game (at the earliest).

The veteran winger has been a full participant in practice since last week, but he hasn't played since he sustained a concussion Oct. 20 against the Ducks, so the Canadiens are going to give him all the time he needs to get back to 100 percent before inserting him back into the lineup. Montreal should release another update on Hemsky's status once he's given the green light to return to action.

Hemsky (concussion) will join the team for its upcoming two-game road trip but is not expected to play, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports.
Hemsky recently ditched the non-contact jersey at practice and will take another step in his recovery by traveling with the club. While the Habs have not provided a specific timeline for the winger's return, slotting into the lineup for Saturday's tilt with Boston certainly seems like a possibility. The Czech will need to be activated off injured reserve in order to play, along with an additional roster move to clear space under the 23-man limit.

Hemsky last saw game action Oct. 20 against the Ducks, remaining on the sideline since then as he continues to struggle with concussion symptoms. He's finally made enough progress to return to practice without contact, but the winger remains without a timetable to return at the moment. More information on his status should surface as he closes in on a return to the ice.

The news that Hemsky has been unable to get on the ice does not bode well for his long-term prospects of returning -- whether that means this season or beyond. The 2001 first-round pick has missed the Habs' previous 17 outings and appears no closer to joining the lineup. Simply skating would be just the first step in the winger's recovery process, so fantasy owners probably shouldn't be banking on a return any time soon.

Hemsky (upper body) will go on injured reserve, per the NHL's official media site.
The 34-year-old originally sustained his injury Friday against Anaheim and although it appeared he was taken to the locker room as a precaution, he'll sit out at least the next week to rehab his ailment. Although Hemsky has been held pointless so far in the 2017-18 season, he's been receiving 3:00 of ice time on the power play, and been a veteran leader for Montreal. Hemsky can first return Saturday against the Rangers, and expect Torrey Mitchell to receive some ice time in his absence.

Hemsky has already been placed on injured reserve, with the team offering clarification regarding the nature of his ailment. Hemsky suffered an upper-body injury during the first period of Friday's 6-2 loss to Anaheim and did not return, Stu Cowan of the Montreal Gazette reports.
Hemsky took a couple of hard bodychecks and never came out of the locker room after the first intermission. Hemsky will have a few days to heal before the next game Tuesday against Florida.

Hemsky had three shots and two PIM over 11:02 of ice time in Tuesday's 5-2 loss to San Jose.
Hemsky is pointless with five minor penalties over five games and could be headed toward a healthy scratch Wednesday in Los Angeles. Three of his five penalties have been for slashing, an area the NHL has strictly enforced early on in 2017-18. Head coach Claude Julien's post-game comments to Stu Cowan of the Montreal Gazette suggest the 34-year-old forward will be watching Wednesday's game from the press box. "You can't slash in this league," Julien said when asked about Hemsky. "I think a lot of them have been slashing penalties, so he's got to get a little bit more disciplined with his stick."

Hemsky joined Montreal on a one-year deal during the offseason and appears to be back to 100 percent after playing in just 15 games last year due to various injuries. The winger will likely find himself competing with Andreas Martinsen for ice time throughout the 2017-18 campaign, which will certainly be a red flag unless fantasy owners can be assured he is logging regular minutes.

Hemsky (hip) penned a one-year deal with Montreal on Monday worth $1 million.
After suffering a hip injury early in the season, Hemsky suited up for just 15 contests for Dallas last year in which he netted four goals and three helpers. The fast start seemed to have the winger poised for a third-straight 30-point campaign, but unfortunately he was never able to get back into the lineup. While the veteran's production is unlikely to replace that of Alexander Radulov -- who departed for Dallas -- the 33-year-old Hemsky should provide some important depth scoring from the Habs' third or fourth line.
