Seidenberg has retired from professional hockey, EISHockeyNews.de reports.
Seidenberg signed a contract with the Islanders in late February, but ended up never suiting up for the team. The 38-year-old blueliner will retire having racked up 44 goals and 251 points during an NHL career that spanned 15 years and six different teams.

Islanders' Dennis Seidenberg: Still hasn't played
Seidenberg has yet to play a game with the Islanders despite signing a contract Feb. 26.
Under the best of circumstances, Seidenberg was unlikely to play for the Islanders, as he was no better than the team's eighth defenseman, and that was before the team called up Devon Toews and saw how well he could play. Seidenberg will be 38 years of age this summer and if he wishes to continue his NHL career, it will likely be with a team other than the Islanders.

Islanders' Dennis Seidenberg: Signed for remainder of season
Seidenberg signed a contract for the rest of the season with the Islanders on Sunday, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports.
Seidenberg had been on a PTO and has been practicing with the Isles all season long. The contract means that he will continue to provide the Isles with a veteran defenseman insurance policy, but the veteran is unlikely to play unless several injuries bog down the team's defense corps.

Seidenberg has been the definition of a "break glass in case of emergency" player. At this point, it would seem the only way he gets into a game is if the Islanders were to lose two defensemen during the morning skate and not have any time to recall someone from Bridgeport of the AHL.

Seidenberg spent last season with the Islanders, suiting up in 28 games and recording five points -- all assists. The 37-year-old has quickly gone from everyday defender to roster depth, and will only rarely see the ice if he converts this PTO into a full-time contract.

Dennis Seidenberg: Partakes in informal session with Isles
Seidenberg, who is currently an unrestricted free agent, participated in an informal skate with the Islanders on Thursday, Arthur Staple of The Athletic New York reports.
The German spent the past two seasons with the Isles, adding five goals and 22 assists over 101 games. Given that Seidenberg is 37 years old, it's safe to deduce that he's drawing close to retirement, but his presence at the informal skate suggests that he's at least contemplating playing at least one more season. Still, there hasn't been any official word that he's signed a PTO with New York.

Islanders' Dennis Seidenberg: Set to play in World Championship
Seidenberg will suit up for Team Germany in the World Championships next month, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports.
The 36-year-old played in 28 games for the Islanders this year, bouncing in-an-out of the lineup for most of the season. He registered just five assists and a minus-9 rating. The World Championships will start up in May and Seidenberg should play an important role on the team's blue line.

Seidenberg has only played three games this calendar year and has been a healthy scratch in seven of the past eight Islanders games.
One might have thought that with injuries to Johnny Boychuk (lower body) and Calvin de Haan (shoulder), Seidenberg would've have seen an increase in playing time. That has not been the case, however, as coach Doug Weight has preferred to use younger defenders like Ryan Pulock and Sebastian Aho. It looks like Seidenberg will only be used when a starting defender needs a day off or when a late injury occurs before the team can call up another defender from the AHL.

Seidenberg collected two assists, four hits and a blocked shot Thursday in a 6-4 road loss to the Flyers.
This was the second multi-assist performance for Seidenberg this season, but he's having a tough time drawing into the lineup these days let alone impressing fantasy owners with his offensive binges. Generally, a good starting point in searching for a fantasy defender is making sure he skates at least 20 minutes per game; the German doesn't check that box.

This should not come as a surprise to anyone, as Seidenberg was re-signed during the summer as veteran insurance for the Islanders defense. He has two assists, is a minus-3, and averages just under 18 minutes of ice time when he does play, but he will continue to be a healthy scratch more often than not.
