In terms of pure ability, Jose Fernandez ranks up there with Clayton Kershaw, and it's evident in ratios. Among pitchers who threw at least 30 innings last year, he and Kershaw were the only two starters to rank among the top 15 in FIP, which basically means they're as dominant over seven innings as some of the top closers are over one. But while Kershaw took on an ace workload, Fernandez made only 11 starts. Granted, he was recovering from Tommy John surgery, so maybe we should just be celebrating the fact he made it back. But his return trip to the DL for a strained biceps in August is worrisome, as is the likelihood of him having an innings limit this year. Fernandez's upside makes him a clear ace in Fantasy, but you wouldn't want to wait long to grab your second pitcher.
