I'm in a keeper league with a $260 cap. I have Derrek Lee on the DL and he is going to be $25 next year. Do you think he's a keeper at that price after the injury and all the time off? I think he's worth $25, but not much more, and my other problem is that his salary is keeping me from making some free agent moves right now and I'm still trying to make a push for this year. Your wisdom on this situation would be greatly appreciated. -Ryan
B.F.: If you can win this season -- go for it. The whole purpose of having valuable keepers is to win the league at some point. Therefore, it makes little sense to blow a chance at winning now just to hold a decent keeper. You need to evaluate your situation in the standings and determine if you have a realistic chance to bring home the title. As for Lee, I think last season was his career year and he shouldn't be expected to produce that type of output in 2007.
I have the opportunity to trade Josh Johnson for Jered Weaver. I'm in a keeper league with a rookie keeper. Weaver is hot now, but Johnson has proven himself over the length of the season. Is Weaver for real? Which of these guys has better long term potential in a Head-to-Head league? - Nat Lipanovich, Berkeley, CA
B.F.: Weaver is an elite pitching prospect on a team that should annually contend. Johnson is merely a solid prospect who is pitching very well this season. We'd go ahead and make the deal.
I'm in a long-term keeper league. Out of Billy Butler, Joel Guzman, Chris B. Young and Mike Pelfrey, which two should I keep? - Tony Base, Albuquerque, NM
B.F.: I'd go with Butler and Pelfrey, who have the highest ceilings among the players you listed. Butler, who has 12 homers, 85 RBI and a .322 batting average at Double-A Wichita, could arrive an a must-have power hitter as early as next season. Pelfrey has a chance to be a future No. 1 starter for the large-market, and contending, Mets.
I have been offered a trade that I can't pull the trigger on. I get Bobby Abreu and Torii Hunter for Carlos Beltran and Marcus Thames. What do you think? - John, West Palm Beach, FL
B.F.: You did a good thing by not pulling the trigger. Beltran is clearly the best player in the deal and Thames has emerged as a terrific source of home runs. Abreu and Hunter might seem like more star quality, but you did the right thing.
