Medina was designated for assignment Tuesday, Bill Brink of the Pittsburg Post-Gazette reports.
With the Pirates claiming A.J Schugel off waivers from the Diamondbacks on Tuesday, the club needed to clear space on its 40-man roster and did so by designating Medina. He made 17 appearances last season as a member of the Mariners and Cubs, working a 4.71 ERA with 16 strikeouts and 11 walks over 21.0 innings.
