Ivan Nova had a breakout campaign in 2013, finishing with a career-best 3.10 ERA and 1.29 WHIP. His 7.9 K/9 was actually a step down from his previous season's rate, but Fantasy owners will take it, as his ERA was almost two runs lower than it was in 2012. There was still a bit of rockiness early, as Nova entered July with a 4.63 ERA, was bounced between the bullpen and rotation, and was even demoted for a handful of starts. Then he went on a tear -- from July 5 forward, Nova had a 2.59 ERA and 1.18 WHIP. The overall numbers masked some starts with four-plus runs (three of them) and his strikeout totals were unpredictable (11 in one game, two in another). Nova still carries some risk, but his 2013 finish is encouraging enough to make him draftable in the later rounds of most drafts.
