Marlins' Wilkin Castillo: Cut loose by Miami
The Marlins released Castillo on Tuesday.
Castillo signed with Miami earlier this month after the team placed backstops Jorge Alfaro (COVID-19) and Chad Wallach (undisclosed) on the injured list, but both have since resumed working out at the organization's alternate training site in Jupiter. With both players nearing returns and Francisco Cervelli and Ryan Lavarnway still ahead of him in the pecking order at catcher, Castillo was deemed expendable.

Marlins' Wilkin Castillo: Joins Miami's player pool
Castillo signed a minor-league contract with the Marlins and was added to the organization's 60-man roster pool Aug. 3.
The 36-year-old will bolster Miami's depth at catcher, but he'll remain at the organization's alternate training site for the duration of 2020 unless the Marlins require another backstop at some point. The Marlins are already without two of their top three catchers in Jorge Alfaro (COVID-19) and Chad Wallach (undisclosed).

Marlins' Wilkin Castillo: DFA'd by Miami
Castillo was designated for assignment by the Marlins on Tuesday.
Castillo will head to the waivers after being kicked off the 40-man roster. The backstop has put together a .250/.310/.408 slash line with six homers and 24 RBI over 58 games this season at Triple-A New Orleans.

Marlins' Wilkin Castillo: Sent down
Castillo was optioned to Triple-A New Orleans on Friday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
With Jorge Alfaro returning from a concussion, Castillo will head back down for the time being. Castillo only recorded one hit in seven at-bats with Miami, but regardless his is one of the best feel-good stories of the year in baseball; it took him a decade, but Castillo managed to claw his way back to the big leagues.

Castillo's contract was purchased by the Marlins on Friday.
The 35-year-old has just 37 big-league plate appearances to his name, none of which have come since 2009. He'll back up Bryan Holaday with both Jorge Alfaro and Chad Wallach recovering from concussions.

Yankees' Wilkin Castillo: Latches on with Yankees
Castillo had his contract purchased from the independent Long Island Ducks on Thursday.
Castillo was hitting .308/.400/.492 with two homers across 19 games with the Ducks prior to latching on with the Yankees. The 34-year-old has appeared in just 22 big-league games over his 15-year career, and none since 2009, so don't expect him to serve as anything more than organizational catching depth with the Yankees.

Yankees' Wilkin Castillo: Inks minor league deal with Yankees
Castillo signed a minor league deal with the Yankees on Saturday, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports.
The veteran catcher spent last season in the Blue Jays' organization, slashing .250/.250/.344 at Triple-A Buffalo over 10 games. He figures to add depth at either Double-A Trenton or Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, but a 32-year-old catcher that hasn't played at the major league level since 2009 is unlikely to crack the Yankees' 25-man roster.
