The switch-hitting Taveras has fared better against right-handed pitching (87 wRC+) than lefties (75 wRC+) over his seven-year big-league career, so he'll be given a breather for the series finale while Arizona sends southpaw Eduardo Rodriguez to the hill. Blaze Alexander will enter the lineup in center field in place of Taveras, who had started each of the last five games while going 6-for-18 with two doubles, two walks, four RBI and three runs.

Taveras has historically provided most of his value with his defense and speed, but he's held his own at the plate over his previous three starts, going 4-for-12 with a pair of doubles, two runs and an RBI during that stretch. He could be in line for regular reps in the Baltimore outfield until the team reclaims some health.

Taylor Ward will serve as the Orioles' designated hitter Wednesday, but his absence from the outfield will open up a spot for Tavares, who will make his first start of the season. The 27-year-old's playing time will likely remain sporadic throughout the 2026 campaign while the Orioles are at full strength in the outfield.
Taveras agreed to a one-year, $2 million contract with the Orioles on Wednesday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
Taveras will head east after spending 2025 with the Rangers and Mariners. The 27-year-old slashed just .205/.226/.304 in the regular season across 180 big-league plate appearances, though he posted a much more respectable .809 OPS in 81 games at Triple-A Tacoma. Now with the Orioles, he is likely to work as a depth piece at Triple-A Norfolk or come off the bench for the big club.

Taveras cleared waivers Friday and was outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma.
The Mariners booted Taveras from the 40-man roster Monday and he went unclaimed on waivers. The 26-year-old outfielder will look to get back on track with Tacoma after slashing .174/.198/.272 across 98 plate appearances with Seattle. Taveras slashed .241/.259/.342 with the Rangers earlier this season before being waived in early May.

Since being claimed off waivers from the Rangers and getting added to the active roster May 7, Taveras has started in right field in all but one of the Mariners' ensuing 13 games. However, Taveras has largely failed to capitalize on the opportunity, as he's slashing just .150/.186/.225 with zero home runs, one stolen base, four RBI and three runs while striking out at a 38.6 percent clip. Though the Mariners don't have many appealing alternatives available, Taveras' hold on an everyday role could nonetheless be tenuous if he continues to flounder at the plate.
