Angels' Reid Detmers: Strikes out nine in win Tuesday

Detmers (1-1) earned the win Tuesday against the Yankees, allowing one run on four hits and no walks with nine strikeouts across seven innings.
After getting hit hard in his previous start against Atlanta, Detmers went a season-high seven innings, and it was his second start of the season with nine strikeouts and zero walks after he accomplished the feat in just 4.2 innings versus Houston on March 28. Detmers has always had intriguing stuff, but putting it together consistently has been the issue for the 26-year-old. Now getting a chance in the rotation again this season, Detmers owns a 3.57 ERA and 26:6 K:BB across 22.2 innings. Four of his strikeouts came on his changeup, which has been his most improved pitch in 2026 to go along with a mid-90s fastball and plus slider. Detmers is in line to make his next start Sunday at home against the Padres.

Detmers (0-1) took the loss Wednesday against Atlanta, allowing six runs (five earned) on five hits and two walks in 4.1 innings. He struck out four.
Hard contact plagued the left-hander Wednesday, as four of his knocks allowed went for extra bases. Detmers was never quite able to settle in either, giving up at least one run in each of the first three frames before being chased from the outing at 92 pitches with one out in the fifth. Detmers' return to the rotation this year has yielded mixed results -- he holds a 4.60 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 17:6 K:BB over 15.2 innings -- and things won't get much easier with a tough matchup against the Yankees looming for his next start.

Angels' Reid Detmers: Spins 6.2 shutout innings

Detmers didn't factor into the decision Friday against the Mariners, allowing three hits and four walks with four strikeouts across 6.2 scoreless innings.
Detmers threw just 11 first-pitch strikes to his 26 batters faced but worked around his four free passes while firing 104 pitches. The Angels haven't eased Detmers back into the rotation at all, letting him throw 199 pitches across two starts to open the 2026 campaign after he spent last season in the bullpen. Detmers hasn't factored into the decision in either start and will carry a 2.38 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 13:4 K:BB over 11.1 innings into his next start Wednesday against Atlanta.

Detmers took a no-decision Saturday against the Astros, allowing three runs on six hits and no walks in 4.2 innings. He struck out nine.
The strikeouts certainly stand out for Detmers, who last recorded at least nine punchouts back in 2023, but he perhaps pounded the zone too aggressively at times while surrendering three extra-base hits. The Angels are deploying the left-hander as a starter to begin 2026 after Detmers made 61 appearances in relief a season ago, though it remains to be seen how long of a leash he'll have in the rotation. Detmers is scheduled to face the division-rival Mariners at home his next time out.

Detmers completed four innings in a Cactus League contest against Cleveland on Friday, allowing two runs on two hits and two walks while striking out five batters.
Detmers gave up a pair of runs in the second inning but ended his start by retiring the final seven batters he faced. The southpaw threw 39 of 64 pitches for strikes and got a healthy 11 whiffs. Detmers had given up five runs over 4.2 frames across his first two appearances this spring, so Friday's outing was a step in the right direction. He's locked into a role in the Angels' rotation to begin the campaign, but given his success as a reliever last year, the team could opt to move him back to the bullpen at some point if the return to starting doesn't go well.

Detmers is being given the opportunity to return to the rotation this season, so his first appearance of the exhibition slate came as a starter. It didn't go well for the left-hander, however, as he fell behind 2-0 after two batters when Danny Jansen took him deep to left field. Detmers gave up another run later in the first inning and was pulled having recorded just two outs, but under spring-training rules, he returned for the top of the second and had a much better outcome, retiring all three batters he faced in that frame. Detmers was solid as a reliever last year and has shown flashes of brilliance as a starter in previous campaigns, so there's reason to hope he can stick in the Angels' rotation through the season despite Monday's rough spring showing.

Angels' Reid Detmers: Loses arbitration case

Detmers will make $2.625 million in 2026 after losing his arbitration hearing with the Angels on Tuesday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.
Detmers had filed for $2.925 million, but he will receive the lower of the two figures after finishing the 2025 campaign with a 3.96 ERA and 1.30 WHIP over 63.2 innings. The 26-year-old southpaw worked exclusively out of the bullpen last year, but manager Kurt Suzuki confirmed Tuesday that Detmers will begin 2026 in the Angels' rotation regardless of how he performs during spring training.

Angels' Reid Detmers: Rotation spot secure

Manager Kurt Suzuki confirmed Tuesday that Detmers (elbow) is viewed as a lock for the Angels' Opening Day rotation, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
Though Detmers found some success while working as a full-time reliever in 2025 (3.08 xFIP, 20.7 K-BB% in 63.2 innings), Angels general manager Perry Minasian said back in October that the left-hander earned another opportunity to prove he belongs in the rotation. Detmers apparently won't even need to earn his spot in the rotation with a strong showing in spring training; in addition to Detmers, Suzuki said that Yusei Kikuchi and Jose Soriano are also locked in as starters heading into the start of camp, while Grayson Rodriguez (elbow) will clinch a spot if he emerges from the spring healthy. Though he didn't pitch over the final weeks of this past season after experiencing elbow inflammation, Detmers didn't require offseason surgery and looks like he'll be 100 percent at the onset of camp.
Angels' Reid Detmers: Will move back into rotation

Angels general manager Perry Minasian said Saturday that Detmers (elbow) will move back into the rotation in 2026, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports.
Detmers pitched well in his first season as a full-time reliever in 2025, posting a 3.96 ERA and 80:25 K:BB over 63.2 innings. However, Minasian feels the southpaw has "earned" another shot to be a starting pitcher in 2026 and is "a different guy" than the one who held a 4.90 ERA over 75 starts from 2021-24. Detmers struck out 418 batters across 385.2 frames during the latter stretch, so he's displayed strong swing-and-miss stuff as a starter. The lefty ended this season on the 60-day injured list with an injured pitching elbow, but he's expected to recover with rest.
Detmers said Tuesday that tests on his left elbow showed no structural damage so he does not need surgery, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.
Detmers said he is planning a normal winter in terms of offseason work. As for his role next year, he added that he would prefer to start but will do whatever the teams asks of him. The southpaw pitched in 61 games in 2025 but made no starts after spending the first four seasons of his career in the majors as exclusively a starter while posting a 4.90 ERA.
