Javhid Best still working to get cleared

We already mentioned the post-concussion symptoms that are affecting Jaguars linebacker Clint Session, and now we bring you the story of another player trying to overcome multiple concussions to play this season.

That’s Lions running back Jahvid Best, who went on the IR list last year after suffering two concussions in the first six weeks of the season and who still isn’t cleared to practice.

Considering fellow runnig back Mikel Leshoure had a few offseason problems and will be suspended for the first two games of the year -- not to mention he has Achilles tendon concerns -- the Lions offese would be served well if Best could get healthy in time for the regular season.

For now, it’s looking like Kevin Smith could be the man to start at running back in Week 1, because for now, Best -- who suffered his final concussion Oct. 16 -- still isn’t healthy.

“I’m not disappointed. Like I said the only thing I’m worried about is doing everything I can to get cleared,’’ Best said, via the Oakland Press. “Once I get cleared, I’ll be back there.”

OK, and when would that be?

“We have a lot of experts who are handling his case and we’ll defer to them. We’re very optimistic we’ll get him back. His progress is not judged day to day it’s week to week,’’ coach Jim Schwartz said. “When they give us clearance we’ll be ready to go.”

Considering Best also suffered a bad concussion in college at Cal and because Best has had a tough time recovering from his last one, there has been wonder if Best might have to retire after only two years in the league.

Said Best: “That has not crossed my mind yet.”

Here’s hoping he doesn't suffer another concussion this season that would force him to change it.
