Rex Ryan (is back) press conference: 8 things to know
Rex Ryan is BACK. Like full-bore, loud-mouth Rex Ryan. Here are 8 things to know about his press conference.
Rex Ryan was introduced as the new head coach of the Bills on Wednesday. It was everything you'd hope and more.
Here are eight takeaways.
1. Rex Ryan is BACK: The Rex that everyone fell in love disappeared for a while as he limped to the conclusion of his run with the Jets. He wrangled his bombastic personality the last two seasons with the Jets and toned things down under GM John Idzik. By the end of his tenure in New York, Rex was a shell of himself.
Not on Wednesday. He opened up the press conference by tapping the microphone and asking "Is this thing on? Because it's getting ready to be on."
Consider ourselves very much hashtag blessed to have Rex back in our lives and fully empowered by an ownership group that feels "Wild and Crazy Rex" is the best Rex to make the Bills both relevant on and off the field.
2. Guarantees: This is the beauty of Rex Ryan. He doesn't need you to ask him for a guarantee. He understands you expect a guarantee and he's willing to deliver it. He guaranteed a playoff berth for the Bills, despite a 15-year drought.
"Get ready," Ryan said. "We're going."
And he could barely stop himself from guaranteeing a Super Bowl, stopping short at the generic/impossible to not reach goal of "pursuit of a Super Bowl."
3. Kiss the Rings: If you thought Rex was excited about getting to play the Jets and Patriots in a quarter of his games each year and that might've driven him to take this job rather than poke around the market, you're absolutely correct.
His face when first asked about playing against Tom Brady and Bill Belichick was a cross between Tim Curry in Home Alone 2 and the Chesire Cat.
If Rex is being honest -- and he was on Wednesday -- the AFC East is HUGE draw for him as a head coach because of the rivalries it represents.

And if we're being honest -- and we are -- keeping Rex in the division is a huge win for everyone involved.
4. Zingers: Doug Marrone opted out of his deal with the Bills (owner Terry Pegula said Wednesday he was "shocked") to pocket $4 million and pursue other jobs (his old deal doesn't have off-setting language in it). Ryan replaced him and definitely took a shot at Marrone and "loyalty" on his way in.
"This fanbase, the loyalty they showed, this football team, deserves a loyal coach. And deserves loyal players. That's what we're bringing. We will bring it. No one's more loyal than me as a football coach."
5. Lessons Learned: Has Rex learned any lessons from losing his job with the Jets? Because the biggest lesson he should learn is he needs a competent quarterback if he wants to win.
"Do I have to get better in certain areas? No question about it," Rex said."
He didn't have strong QB play for stretches with Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith was most certainly not the answer. This makes his response re: EJ Manuel a little concerning.
"He has a lot of traits you look for in a quarterback," Ryan said.
Manuel was a first round pick two years ago but he's since been benched for Kyle Orton, who since retired. If Manuel can take a MASSIVE step forward, it's possible the Bills could win with him under center. But logic says they'll struggle if they go down that road.

Rex was too stubborn to see quarterback as an issue with the Jets, and he better hope he learned his lesson because an impotent offense will mean trouble.
6. Defense: The Bills already head a good defense before hiring Rex (No. 2 according to Football Outsiders, No. 4 in yards allowed) but he wants to take things up top.
"We're going to build a bully," Rex said.
He expects that bully to take over the schoolyard and beat everyone else to the top.
"I know we'll lead the league in defense. That's just the way it goes," Rex said.
As for what kind of defense they'll play, Ryan hinted things won't change much and they'll fit the way they attack around the players they have on the roster.
"We play defense based on our personnel, not just a scheme," Rex said.
7. Players Pumped
Fred Jackson said the Bills "got better at head coaching position" before Rex's press conference and fellow running back C.J. Spiller didn't seem upset about the move either.
Rex just dropped the mic when he got done speaking at the podium I can feel his energy just by watching this press conference

Say whatever you want about Rex but his players LOVE playing for him.
8. Buying an igloo
This is just the most Rex Ryan and most Buffalo thing ever.
Terry Pegula says Rex asked his realtor where most snow fell in Buffalo area. Wants to live there.
