Lee Stempniak: Announces retirment
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Stempniak announced his retirement from the NHL on Tuesday, Mike Zeisberger of NHL.com reports.

Stempniak defied the odds as a fifth-round pick, enjoying a highly successful career that spanned 14 seasons and 10 different teams. The 36-year-old winger will hang up his skates having racked up 203 goals and 469 points in 911 NHL appearances.

Bruins' Lee Stempniak: Sent back down
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Stempniak was returned to AHL Providence on Monday, Conor Ryan of the Daily Free Press reports.

Stempniak didn't give the team much in his first two NHL appearances of the 2018-19 campaign, posting no shots or points and a minus-1 rating while skating 7:46 and 7:52 in a Saturday-Sunday back-to-back. The 36-year-old veteran is no longer cut out for the top level at this stage of his career.

Bruins' Lee Stempniak: Called up as emergency option
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Stempniak was recalled from AHL Providence on an emergency basis Saturday.

This name should ring a bell since Stempniak has 13 years of NHL experience under his belt between 10 clubs. With Jake DeBrusk tending to a foot injury ahead of Saturday's game against the Senators, there's a chance the 36-year-old journeymen will be called upon for his first NHL game since April 7, 2018. He has 469 points (203 goals, 266 assists) through 909 career contests.

Bruins' Lee Stempniak: Signs with Bruins
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

The Bruins signed Stempniak to a two-way contract for the remainder of the season, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports.

Stempniak was sent to waivers for the purpose of assigning him to AHL Providence. This move will allow the Bruins to recall Stempniak at any point, including the playoffs. However, he likely won't rise to the lineup unless there's an injury.

Lee Stempniak: Keeping options open
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Though Stempniak, who was with the Bruins in training camp on a professional tryout agreement, is not on the team's roster, his preference is to play for Boston down the road if the opportunity to do so arises, Joe Haggerty of NBC Sports Boston reports.

In the meantime, Stempniak is free to mull other opportunities, but for now he's an option for the Bruins if the team wants to add some veteran depth up front. The 35-year-old logged just three goals and nine points in 37 games for Carolina last season, but when healthy, Stempniak can provide experience and occasional bursts of secondary scoring while working as a bottom-six forward.

Bruins' Lee Stempniak: Three points in preseason win
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Stempniak scored a goal and two assists in Monday's 4-3 preseason win over the Flyers.

The 35-year-old journeyman is trying to get his career back on track with the Bruins after missing most of 2017-18 due to various injuries, so Monday's performance is definitely a step in the right direction. Stempniak will have to settle for a checking-line role if he does break camp on Boston's roster, however, and his days as a consistent 15-goal, 40-point scorer are likely behind him.

Bruins' Lee Stempniak: Inks PTO
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Stempniak will join the Bruins for training camp on a professional tryout agreement.

Stempniak missed the bulk of the 2017-18 campaign due to various injuries, as he appeared in just 37 contests. If the winger can prove he still has something in the tank and is fully fit, he may be able to secure a permanent contract -- although a wealth of talented youngsters stand in the way.

Hurricanes' Lee Stempniak: Reduced role in 2017-18
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Stempniak put up three goals and nine assists in 37 games during 2017-18, averaging just 12:28 of ice time.

After injuries sidelined the veteran until Jan. 12, Stempniak had just a limited role in his second season with Carolina seeing his ice time drop from 15:51 to 12:28 in 2017-18, along with his points-per-game dip from .49 to .24 this season. The veteran still came out firing putting up 41 shots on goal, and since 60 percent of his shifts began in the offensive zone it's surprising he wasn't able to make more of an impact, but perhaps the upper-body injury lingered throughout the season. Stempniak is set to be a free agent, and could very well join another club as Carolina continues to rebuild for a playoff push.

Hurricanes' Lee Stempniak: Sees ice time dwindle Thursday versus Coyotes
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Stempniak skated just 7:57 and was a minus-3 with zero shots on goal in Thursday's 6-5 win over the Coyotes.

With the emergence of several younger, more talented forwards on the Canes roster this season -- including Teuvo Teravainen, Sebastian Aho and Brock McGinn -- Stempniak has gradually drifted down the team's depth chart and now sits firmly entrenched in a fourth-line role. He is currently playing out the last year of his two-year contract, raising questions about whether he will return to the team next year or seek employment elsewhere. Either way, his days as a viable fantasy option appear to be well behind him.

Hurricanes' Lee Stempniak: Extends scoring drought Thursday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Stempniak registered his 11th consecutive game without a point Thursday against the Blackhawks, failing to shoot in just 9:03 of ice time.

Now with just five points in 24 games since returning in January from an upper-body injury, Stempniak's ineffectiveness has finally earned him a spot on the team's fourth line. The 35-year-old veteran is currently in the final year of a two-year contract with the Canes, who are unlikely to re-sign him given the decline in his offensive skills. At this point, his future in the NHL is uncertain at best.

Hurricanes' Lee Stempniak: Ice time on decline
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Stempniak snapped a six-game pointless streak with an assist in Saturday's 3-1 win over the Avalanche.

After missing the first half of the season with an upper-body injury, Stempniak returned to the lineup in mid-January and was immediately slotted into a top-six role, averaging 14:32 in ice time his first nine games back. Since then, however, he has been dropped to the fourth line, with his minutes falling to the 7-10 range. His fantasy value takes a sharp decline as a result. Look for a replacement.

Hurricanes' Lee Stempniak: Four points in six games following return from IR
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Stempniak had a goal and three assists in six games prior to the All-Star break, adding six shots on goal and 10 hits over that span.

Stempniak has certainly made his presence felt after missing the first half of the season to an upper-body injury. Stempy registered 40 points in 82 games last season, so his return to the lineup is very positive news for the Canes, who currently sit just four points out of a playoff spot in the East. He makes for a good waiver-wire pickup candidate in deeper formats.

Hurricanes' Lee Stempniak: Bags apple in season debut
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Stempniak delivered an assist in his season debut Friday night against the Capitals, but it wasn't enough as the Hurricanes lost 4-3 in Raleigh.

The veteran recorded 13:35 of ice time, which was a few minutes lower than his average from last season, but we recommend that you practice patience with Stempniak. He's a no-frills playmaker who could start seeing power-play ice time once he gets his legs back.

Hurricanes' Lee Stempniak: Likely returning later in week
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Stempniak (upper body) is not scheduled to play Tuesday night's game in Tampa Bay, but will likely draw into the lineup for either or both of Carolina's games against Washington on Thursday and Friday, Michael Smith of the Hurricanes' official site reports.

The wait for Stempniak's season debut just got a little longer, but all signs point to the veteran winger finally cracking the lineup later in the week in the home-and-home series against the Capitals. The New York native is by no means a fantasy stud, but he can be useful in the right matchup and could especially be so with his fresh legs coming in around the midpoint of the season.

Hurricanes' Lee Stempniak: Cleared to play
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Stempniak (upper body) was activated off injured reserve Monday.

Stempniak figures to return to the lineup in a bottom-six role against the Lightning on Tuesday. The winger was close to making his 2017-18 debut in mid-November, but suffered an upper-body injury while on a conditioning assignment for a separate back ailment. With half the season remaining, the New York native should be capable of reaching the 20-point mark and could push for 30.

Hurricanes' Lee Stempniak: Non-contact participant Monday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Stempniak (upper body) wore a yellow no contact sweater in Monday's practice, Michael Smith of the Hurricanes' official site reports.

Stempniak was place on the DL in mid-November, but is nearing a return. It's a positive sign to see him practicing -- his next step will likely be to able to practice with contact.

Hurricanes' Lee Stempniak: Nearing return to practice
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Stempniak (upper body) could return to practice as soon as Monday, Michael Smith of the Hurricanes' official site reports.

Stempniak should still be considered out indefinitely, but a return to practice would obviously represent a huge step in the right direction in his recovery. The 34-year-old winger has yet to draw into a game this season due to various maladies, so the Hurricanes may opt to send him to the minors on a conditioning stint once he's finally cleared to play.

Hurricanes' Lee Stempniak: Headed to injured reserve
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Stempniak (upper body) was placed on injured reserve Monday.

The 34-year-old just can't stay healthy and will head to injured reserve for the second time this season. Stempniak suffered the injury just a couple shifts into his first conditioning game with AHL Charlotte on Friday, and the new ailment is reportedly separate from the back issues he's been dealing with. Josh Jooris and Phillip Di Giuseppe figure to receive increased roles in his absence.

Hurricanes' Lee Stempniak: Suffers new injury
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Stempniak -- who was out on a conditioning assignment for a back ailment -- suffered an upper-body injury that is expected to sideline him long term, Cory Lavalette of the North State Journal reports.

This latest malady is a huge blow for Stempniak, who still has yet to make his 2017-18 debut. With the veteran once again unavailable, the Canes were forced to call up Phil Di Giuseppe in order to provide additional forward depth. While it has yet to officially happen, given the pessimism expressed by head coach Bill Peters, Stempniak is likely bound for another stint on injured reserve.

Hurricanes' Lee Stempniak: Ends conditioning assignment
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Stempniak (back) was recalled from his conditioning assignment Sunday.

The 34-year-old is known best for his strong shot that notched him 16 goals last year, and he's also coming off back-to-back 40 point efforts. However, with Carolina loaded with right wingers this year (Teuvo Teravainen, Elias Lindholm, and Justin Williams have all been logging consistent minutes), it's unclear what line Stempniak will be placed on.
