Red Sox's Blake Swihart: Work in progress

Swihart "continues to be a work in progress," according to Boston catching instructor Dana LeVangie, the Providence Journal reports.

Advanced defensive metrics weren't kind to Swihart last season and early in 2016, there hasn't been much to alleviate doubts in that area of his game. Overall, the starting staff has been a mess (6.86 ERA, 29th in MLB) and in his six games, the Red Sox have totaled four wild pitches and three passed balls. His misplay of a wind-blown foul ball Tuesday gave renewed life to Baltimore's Mark Trumbo, who homered five pitches later -- the key hit in what turned out to be a Boston loss. With Christian Vazquez's recovery from elbow surgery yielding encouraging results at Triple-A Pawtucket, there could be a job share looming for the young catcher.
