Payton agreed Monday with the Suns on a one-year deal, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports.

Payton will join the Suns for his second stint in Phoenix, where he played briefly during the 2017-18 campaign. The point guard was a starter for the Knicks during the past two seasons, but his efficiency as a passer took a major hit in 2020-21, as he averaged a career-low 3.2 assists per contest. With the Suns re-signing starter Chris Paul this offseason, Payton will challenge Cameron Payne for the top backup spot at point guard.
