Russo was placed on waivers by the Devils on Sunday, James Mirtle of The Athletic reports.
Russo was always a long-shot to make the roster after signing a two-way deal with the Devils in the offseason. He hasn't appeared at the NHL level since going scoreless over 19 games with Detroit in 2016-17 and will begin the season with AHL Utica if he goes unclaimed on waivers.
